looking into mods
looking into mods
I recently purchased my 07 TT off lease and am now a proud owner.
So I am thinking about mods and was wondering what the experienced folks think:
1. Short Shifter - is the difference significant?
2. i really want black GT3 Rims. My car is Cobalt Blue. Can I get these
through the dealer and will they be over priced? I would need the 5 lug.
3. Exhaust - just thinking mufflers. I want to go loud.
4. ECU - this one I'm not sure because i've read on here that the clutch slips
once you approach the 580 or 600 hp mark.
5. suspension - looking to lower the car about an inch and get something a
bit more track oriented.
Thanks for listening!!!

1. yes, significant improvement with a short shifter. I liked the stock 997.1 turbo shifting, but after putting on the OEM SSK the shifting is much more precise. A perfect feel. If you're even thinking of making the move, I bet you would like the SSK.

On your mods:
1- Factory Short Shift Kit (SSK) is an excellent mod. You will definitely feel a difference in a very positive way.
2- Rims: If you are patient, I am sure that you can eventually grab a set of used GT3 rims for good value and have them painted to your color of choice.
On the other hand, I would strongly recommend to factor in the weight of the rims into your upgrade considerations. Buy the lightest weight rims in the desired size that your money/taste allows for. Reducing unsprung weight/rotating mass will do wonders for the feel/performance of your car.
3- Exhaust: Many choices there. I would recommend you have a listen to the Europipe Stage 2 loud, the BBI (various sound levels to choose from), Cargraphic Loud and the Switzer exhaust systems. My personal recommendation would be the Europipe.
4- ECU tune: A definite must as this mod will yield the highest bang for the buck performance increase. Clutch slippage will eventually occur but not immediately. By the time your clutch starts to slip, upgraded clutch and pressure plate will be a great mod for you anyway. I would then go with AWE's Sachs Stage 2.5 (Stage 2 with upgraded pressure plate). That would leave you with ample room in your clutch holding capacity to upgrade your turbos for some real fun!

5- Suspension: GMG Sways and springs RSS toe links, etc... Con't go wrong with that.
Good luck on your mods and enjoy it to the max.

Regarding rims, there are plenty of lighter alternatives to the GT3 wheels that look pretty similar.
The GT3 wheel was the look I was trying to get when I was looking and the champion RF-67 are pretty close. they are also lighter. The new OZ wheels that were posted here recently in the GT3 section are really nice. They are a painted greyish color and would look great on cobalt. they are also incredibly light.

simple mods like a SSK (I found the B&M to be smoother than the factory SSK), springs, ecu+ exhaust totally transform the 997tt. That combo increased the fun factor by roughly 50% for my car

Hey Joe
1. I would highly suggest a short shifter either the Porsche Unit or B&M Unit. Either one allows you to retain your factory shift **** and boot. Definitely get the upgraded shift links from Evoms to install at the same time.
2. If you really want GT3 wheels, check these guys out. If you change your mind to aftermarket let me know we carry nothing but the best of the best. http://www.wheelenhancement.com/index.php?t=Wheels
3 and 4. Most catless exhausts are loud but if you want something that sounds exotic at the same time youtube search the Tubi Race Exhaust, Its basically the catless version of their street exhaust. I had it on my 997 Turbo here with the APR Software ECU Upgrade. I always ran 100 octane but with this set up I had the fastest 997TT 1/4 mile run and 60mph-130mph times with factory turbos, and was faster than some cars with upgraded turbos. The software upgrade comes with 4 files. Stock, 91 or 93 octane, 100 octane and Valet programs all stored on you your ECU and you can switch using your cruise control switch at anytime any place. You don't need to reflash the car to change. I can send you our net book and walk you through the download process. It downloads right through your OBDII port no removing of the ECU needed
Couple clicks and your done. 5. As for suspension, GMG Springs and H&R springs are two of the best set of springs out there that will work with your factory Bilstein dampers while retaining the PASM function. If your looking to track the car as well then I highly suggest possibly upgrading to a full Bilstein replacement Coilover Suspension. Its height adjustible and will retain your PASM switch. Upgrading your sway bars and links as well, will definitel help.

Good Luck!

Just an FYI, if you purchase GT3 wheels, you will need appropriate spacers to fit them on your turbo. You could rectify this by purchasing GT3RS (or GT2, same thing) wheels which come with correct offsets (US GT2s GT3RSs have an additional 5mm spacer in the rear as well.)

GT3RS offset
Front: 8.5 x 19" - 53 mm offset
Rear: 12 x 19" - 51 mm offset
Turbo offset
Front:8.5 x 19" - 56 mm offset
Rear: 11 x 19" - 51 mm offset
Ed, did you use spacers to fill in the gap because of the overall look? Both of the widebody GT3RS and Turbo body frames accommodate the same offset wheels. The offset difference of 3 mm up front should be pretty negligible. For standard GT3 wheels, however, the difference is significant.

I think for the track and or the street when driving at high speeds or driving a car period with lots of power, to get a set of wheels that fit perfect with out spacers. Just my .02 though. If your going to run spacers please make sure they are hub centric.
Based on the numbers, I don't disagree, Bob. But the pics speak for themselves. The offsets are terrible. Before and after pics:

I think the design of the wheel accentuates the difference.
Joe,
How many times have we talked about all these mods??!! Just drive my car again and you will have all that you need to know.
SSK is awesome and worth every penny.
ECU flash completely changes the car and makes it a real sportscar
same for suspension...what a difference!
Exhaust is great as well....
Dude...just check out my car again.
