From 4.6L M3 to 997.2 Turbo

Hey guys. I recently picked up a 997.2 Turbo. This is my first Porsche and I am having a hard time keeping to the break in period!!! I am coming from a heavily modified M3 and the difference is quite amazing. Have any of you made the switch to from M3 to 911? Thoughts? Likes/dislikes? Thanks in advance.

I cant speak to full acceleration yet but so far the 911 blows the 4.6 away. Handling is mind boggling in the 911. The car seems so much smaller. I am not sure that it is a negative or positive but the M3 seems like much more work. 911 seems so simple...

Well you are comparing two totally different classes of cars. The m3 would more closely compare with the 997.2 S, not the turbo. The .2S is better in every way; handling, acceleration, tranny, looks, mpg, amenities, and fun to drive factor. The m3 is better in price and in people hauling. The m3 is the best bmw right now, until the m5 is released. I drove the hell out of the m3's at the 2 day m-school and it is very impressive. But even the instructors at the school say that its just a car with a sporty character, but its not a sports car. Porsche is a sports car, and with the turbo you got the top notch. Congrats, and do not ever drive a GT3 or 2 or you will become lustful to them and cheat on your turbo.

I'll disagree on looks a feel. The m3 in any shade of white or blue is gorgeous. The steering feel and engine note is amazing. As for performance, no contest. My good friend has an 09 and was absolutely devastated after we raced a few times. My stock 997.1 walked it bad from dig, roll, cornering, etc. Per factory specs there is only 65hp diff, but seemed like hundreds in side by side comparison

I'll also add that the metzger, as great it is, sounds like a broken down bucket of bolts at idle once warmed up. Kind of embarrassing for a $150k car. I'm told the .2 sounds better

Comparing my M3 and 997TT (see sig)...

The M3 is a much more nimble car. Handling is very precise with a lot of feel.

It was easier to push at the limit for me. With the turbo, you've got to have "faith" in the AWD doing it's job especially with the capable yet very numb stock suspension.

Overall I love the TT as a daily driver, I think it is one of the best you can get.

M3 wins with the overall fun factor, though.

Fixed it for you. Perhaps a typo in your post - Mezger has no "t". The sound is "embarrassing"? It's part of what makes the car the longest surviving & most race winning model in automotive history. Check out the autobiography "Porsche and me" for some engine love

Time for some power mods, a na car is never as fun for me as I can tinker and squeeze a bunch of different power bands. A simple exhaust and tune might change your mind...wait until u see a m3 driving in bad conditions and u are still trucking along. For me this is a no contest; Awd steering is engrained in me, floor the gas and it is predictable once you get accustom to how it loses/regrips. Cheers

Info on noise - see post 8 for the article. BTW, the 997.2 is not a GT engine - completely different.

Congrats with the new car. It is hard to compare both cars. Fun in the M3 come at much lower speed and can put on you a big smile at every slow turn. The engine sound of the M3 is also alot more intoxicating than the 997.2TT. The M3 is a slower car at any conditions but alot more fun to drive. No doubt that you will miss it. A FR car (Front engine, Rear wheel drive) is a must have at any enthusiast driver garage.

Thanks. I saw it back then and a few other threads on rennlist. I understand the history and have seen on here it will handle 1100hp on stock internals and >1500 on forged. I knew what I was getting into....Sounds fine on cold start for the first 10-20 min, then just sounds bad as many race engines do at idle.

So did you say 4.6L M3? Did you swap the engine or modified it?
