Back to tt?

What a fun rash of cars since my 2009 tt 6spd that I modded to 650 hp via AWE - GT3, F360, etc. all have been weekend cars.

I've since wanted just 1 car - so past 6 months been in a great 2011 M3 DCT. With my 2 young kids has been a nice mix of practicality and performance.

But I've been yearning to DD a 997tt instead. I have one the dealer provided over the weekend (2007). My kids love it of course and so do I.

But I'm really struggling with whether I want this as a DD. My wife's GL works great as the family backup for weekend trips, etc., but if I need to take that separately she can't drive manual. This has never happed though and would likely be rare.

Any comments from those who had been in a similar position?

Although I could keep both I just don't want one or the other car mostly sitting in the garage.

Cheers.

Get a VW GTI for runabouts when the TT can't be taken out. It's quit a practical car. That is my runabout and the TT is for whenever I can drive it. Next on the agenda is a truck for towing the bike and the cars.

I was/am in a similar boat...

My first turbo after my manual C4 was a tiptronic because I had to be able say to my wife "well you can drive this one" as opposed to worrying about if I took her car she wouldn't be able to get around. That never happened the 4 yrs I owned the C4 and now 4 years after the purchase of the tip turbo she has not driven it but once (and that was just to check it out when I got it). So in 8 yrs it was never an issue. (though I did have an older 3rd car that our sitter uses)

As far as a DD, I so much loved driving my turbo cab in the better months that I wanted to continue all year round. Thing about the turbo(s) is that they are, if not literally, figuratively race car exotic THAT can seat 4pp (2 kids). Plus with awd I can ration that it is winter weather capable. So I got me a 993 turbo and in the past 2 months I have put over 2k miles on it and have a smile every day I drive it, even to work.

A bit long winded here but I do love the car.
Good luck w/ what ever you decide. And remember there is always tomorrow.
Al

I have a Wolfsburg Jetta (GLI in Jetta clothing) and it's a great DD and long distance travel companion.

Did the third car thing for a long while. Had a c63 (modded to 550hp) while I had my tt and GT3 as weekend cars.

Don't want a 3rd car anymore.

I'm leaning away from the tt and back to my M3.

Crap, did I just grow up or something?

Maybe I'll just wait and see how spring fever may change my mind back to the tt

How do you consider going to an M3 growing up? The TT is built to be a daily driver. Now if you have 18 year old Varsity Football DL twins the rear +2s might not work.
Then again an M3 isnt much more roomy. Actually every m3 i have owned has had a perfect backseat from lack of use.

Im guessing in the TT you arent gonna look at every m3 and wish you were in it. Were when you see a TT you are going to ask if the added 1/4inch of legroom was worth it.

Way more than a 1/4" more legroom in an M3. The M3 is just the most practical sports coupe out there. I still check the TT classifieds though and if I go back to Porsche, I'd go TT. Huge difference in praticality though. A 911 is fine for taking the kids to a game, but you can't take anyone in the back for more than 30 minutes. Plus, fold down rear seats! The M3 and the TT, that would be paradise....

Dude, I just sold my M3 last month. For a normal person the difference in a TT rear and m3 rear is that your legs fall asleep 15 min faster in the TT. If you own children, the TT is fine.
Even BMW will tell you if you want a true family saloon, get an M5. If you cant afford it the M3 saloon might work. Now, Im not talking to you, just saying that if you are looking for "a roomy backseat" neither car is the one. No one would enjoy the back seat of either car above the age of 13. Well with the m3 you might have a few more years say 15 years of age.
practical sports car? Is that legal to say

I'm still on the fence.

Had a wonderful weekend with the turbo. My almost 7 year old fits safely in the back better with no booster. 4.5 year old fits safely with the Recaro.

In terms of room back there, the difference between M3 and 911 is significant - mostly regarding face to back seat. Last thing I want is a minor accident that otherwise would not harm the kids in the M3 to cause them to break their faces. But with the setup mentioned it passed the wife test even, so I'm comfortable with the safety.

I could definitely DD the turbo.

I just need to find the right one for me. Looking at '07s with ~20k miles range as the depreciation is the least steep.

I turn my "loaner" turbo in later this morning and we'll see how I feel going back to the M3 (4-door) though.

Teach the wife to drive the manual. Tell her that will be "date night" for a few weeks. Once she gets the hang of it, she'll love it.

Must have been nice to have a loaner! My kids are now 12 and 9 so the space in the back would be tighter. I get in the back and that seat back is right in your face with the sport seats. I have an M3 coupe and even it has plenty of room in the back. I may just end up waiting for the 450 hp turbo next gen M3.

I have a Chevy Subruban and a 07 tt. Perfect book ends. I drive the tt most days, but when it snows, or I'm in rush hour, or need to tow the race trailer, take the hauler.

just get an LS1 based pickup truck (4x4) as a 3rd vehicle. You can tow, haul bikes, construction and landscape material, and park it outside no matter the weather. I wash mine maybe once a year. You'll never experience a more care-free ownership

Thanks all.

I think I'm going back to the tt. Been scouting a few - haven't found just the one yet.

Spent the weekend with an '07. Also may check out a '10 (of course that with the newer, not necessarily better engine).
