Hi Brian, Yep. Very familiar with the politics behind this, I have a TDI and get easily 42 miles per gallon. Now, here is something you need to understand. There is a difference between the US Gallon and the Imperial Gallon used in England. As a matter of fact, I think that the UK has switched over the selling gas in LITERS.
So here are the real numbers:
Imperial Gallon = 4.5461 liters
US Gallon = 3.7854 liters

Also US gallon x 1.2 = Imperial Gallon.

Do a check on the mileage numbers. In the UK - calculated in gallons, it will be Imperial gallons IE 1.2 times larger. So to get the actual gas mileage measured in US gallons, you DIVIDE the UK gas mileage by 1.2.

Nevertheless, the modern diesel are incredibly frugal and we should invest much more money in this OLD technology and ride it until the Hydrogen motors become available in 2017. Cheers

The big gas companies have so much pull with the government they can basically do what they want.

I just got the wife a 2012 Jetta TDI Sportwagon. Great little car!

The real pisser it that Ford will not sell their Focus TDCi here in the USA. Whe stationed in Germany we had one and it gets 83MPG ! No that is not a misprint. If it was sold here I would have two! But instead the TDI Passat will have to do.

Here is the Ford Uk link http://www.ford.co.uk/Cars/Focus/Per...eandefficiency

Like mentioned above pure politics.

(responding to the OP) That's because the US Govt knows there is no real shortage of oil. It's all political.

I work for a VW dealer and I hear reports from my own customers who are experiencing 45-50 mpg on their newer TDI Jettas and Passats.

I personally took out a demo 2012 Passat TDI about a month before they were released and I was able to achieve 44 miles per gallon on a 60 mile trip, and that was a DSG auto transmission versus the manual.

There are a ton of cars that should be here. The big issue is emissions regulations on small Diesel engines kill the mpg significantly. When you delete the DPF on a 09+ tdi you gain about 5-7mpg.

I'm really considering a new tdi. Just googled the dpf delete and it seems to be very effective. Do u know of any vendors that offer this?

Good video. the fact that they wont allow the bluemotion on US roads sucks..whats even more disturbing is that the motors are produced in the us?! I never knew that.

There are currently 2 downpipes available and 2 (major) tuners who can correctly do the DPF delete (stage 2) flash.

Performance diesel engineering offers a downpipe
Rawtek exhaust also has one.

The rawtek build quality is much better than PDE. I am working out getting my friend who builds rally cages to build a downpipe for less than the other 2 companies.

Malone Tuning was the pioneer in DPF delete tunes.
HPA tuning just started offering DPF delete tunes by request. They are not advertising publicly about it.

Revo has talked about the possibility of offering a DPF delete flash but they are scared of the US gov coming after them.

I have a 2012 and 2013 Passat TDI and the only parts made in Germany are the motor and trans. It has about 75% USA made parts right in TN. The 2012 has over 12,000 miles with a total average of 42.9MPG. I love them both!

A VW rep told me with a cold air intake and DPF delete you can pick up an additional 10+mpg. When the warranty is up i plan on giving it a try.

As soon as we can get the bluemotion wagon we will be getting two of those. They should arrive in 2015.

Matt you gave mine a spin anytime you want to swing by.

We have 2013 Passat TDi and 2013 Jetta Sportwagon TDi both with the DSG box. We are getting 52 mpg on the Passat and 48 on the Jetta. Both are great cars and the cool thing is that the Passat is made just 60 miles away from us in Chattanooga. Great for the city and 3800 jobs with more in the works! Buy local!
