Softronic announced a sale over on Planet 9... thinking of a performance flash for the 996 turbo... has anybody bought with the new website, and did you need a Planet 9 membership?
And for you guys, it's for all products... so the 997 Turbo Performance Software is also on sale, with the Durametric...
Any successful purchases without a P9 membership or code?

It is a great deal and you will not regret it! I just installed my softronic tune and it makes a huge difference and for the deal they are offering now there is nothing that makes that much difference for the price!
Why is a canned mail-order tune $2000? I just bought a custom tune for my other car for $300 and it came with a touch screen tuner... and I can get the tune customized for any aftermarket parts I add later as often as I would like, including aftermarket superchargers. Not usually one to ***** about it but the Porsche tax is kind of absurd.

I was always under the impression that Softtronic was one of the best. There is quite the price diff between Softronic and GIAC.
I am all to familiar with all of the details for each but the GIAC seems to be more expensive. That said, those that have it, rave about it!
BTW just throwing another thing out there, I'm not sure I remember seeing this before but it looks like FVD has a cheaper tune available now?
look here
They used to have durametric tune that cost $2000 too...is this something new? Claims are much lower than the softronic but I don't think mail order tunes are going to vary that much.
Also thanks for sharing this deal kaiser.

Why is Softronic one of the best?
It's not always about how much you can save tuning these cars either, sometimes it's not an option unless you want a crap part or job.
They have been around for not 5 minutes but 10 minutes and pushed by clever marketeers.
If I had to choose between GIAC and Softronic it would be GIAC every time.
Also from memory people have not had very good experience's with the softronic after sales service.
I know I am also biased but I stick with FVD as they for one are German, they make all their software in house and they care about their customer even after they have taken your cash which is usually the point where many companies say bye!
Also FVD offer a my genius tool instead of the Durmetrics tool as sometimes when flashing the car with Durum tool you can kill the ECU thanks to it being windows based, which actually happened to me once.
FVD sent UPS to me to pick up the ECU and had it back to me within 2 days!!!
Personally from what I have learnt I would go for the FVD remap with the My Genius tool and buy a PROFI Durum kit for data logging and diagnostics.
Pick wisely and don't be in a rush!

Why? You can buy the pro model if you want it. I would think that very few people actually use the tuning capabilities or even the logging capabilities. I just se my cable to install/uninstall the tune. When you can buy the tune for under $1700 and get a lot of usable horsepower that can be changed back to stock in about 2 minutes whenever you wish is a really good deal. If I was racing my car or was going to the trouble of dyno tuning it with more than bolt on parts I may look at something like giac but I am nowhere near them and I am not going for the highest horsepower. For the layman, as I understand it, all the canned tunes are close to the same power and quality, so why not go with one that is easily installed/removed and better priced?
What are you basing this statement off?

Even more different is the workings of the actual tune. The reason you can reflash your files in 10 minutes is because you are only adjusting the factory maps. While performance can certainly be gained through this method, you have far greater control when you actually re-write the factory code (even adding entirely new maps to control functions). Besides performance and drivability improvements, this leads to neat features like on-the-fly software switching. Such a feature can fully change programs in a second, because re-writing the code allows us to store more than one performance map in the factory ECU.
The negative view of a "canned" tune really comes from the fairly static ECU's that are found in a lot of JDM cars (among others). For example, while some of these cars might have 1-2 timing maps in the factory ECU, newer Porsche ECU's frequently have over 20 timing maps. So while the former may indeed require a custom tune due to the nature of the ECU, the ECU's found in the newer European cars are so dynamic that it largely negates the need for a "custom" tune. With that being said, software options are available for different hardware combinations. But my point is that if you called us for a custom dyno tune for your car (as is common on other platforms), there really wouldn't be many changes to make unless you had a one-off setup of turbos, fueling, etc. You could also force the ECU to operate within a set number of maps, but this is not something that would be recommended for safe operation (race cars excluded).
Additionally, we develop all of our flashing tools and suites in-house. This ultimately gives us a greater level of control over the ECU due to the fact that we are not limited to a tool that was purchased from a third-party developer.
Thomas@GIAC,
I meant no disrespect to you or any other tuner in my commentary. I never meant to imply that I owned all the tunes and compared them. As far as I know, reading on here and other forums, the power gains for the 911 turbos are anywhere from 80 to 110 hp without other changes, just a tune. For someone like me, not setting world records here, that is a significant gain at a really good price "softronic" and is easy to do and undo if needed. I am not going to dyno my car before and after so seat of the pants and the occasional track jaunt are all I care about. I enjoy reading about everybody's dyno exploits and super high horsepower but my car isn't that car. I tuned my car with a cable in under 2 minutes and can reinstall the factory map in the same amount of time. I am sure if I was putting tens of thousands of dollars in my engine I would take it somewhere to be tuned with a custom tune like GIAC. There are too many results to copy and post about horsepower numbers, so I took a couple of minutes and copy and pasted below a few of them.
Some examples I have found:
1) We have Todd from EVOMS flying in to help us tune some secret projects and while he's here, to pay for his room, board and extracurricular activities (book binding, snowmobile drag racing) we're going to have a 20% discount on all flashes. Software tuning is the easiest way to have tangible power gains (60-80+ HP depending on application) and sharper throttle response on your car.
If you're in our area swing by and we can remove the ECU and have Todd/Alex flash the car for you. If you are not local, you can remove the ECU and send it to us overnight and we will send it right back to you overnight once it's flashed.
2) APR Performance ECU Upgrade
2009 Porsche 911 Turbo H6 3.6L
Unleash the hidden power in your Porsche
Following installation, you will notice massive performance gains, including peak numbers of 610 horsepower and 698 pound-feet of torque. This upgrade will give your car a very noticeable performance edge over cars without it.
3)911tuning
Stage 1-550/580Race
Our stage-1 custom tune is rated at 550HP on pump gas and 570HP on 100 octane race gas. We strongly suggest our high flow X design exhaust, intercoolers, competition Y-pipe, and for more power upgraded VTG compressor wheels(65mm or 63.5mm). We offer custom race gas files as well as brake boosting upon request. We can upload multiple tunes via our hand held flasher purchased …

Crank hp gain is about 115. Some cars we would see a 80 awhp gain!
