Advice - Sell my 2009 997.1?

I'm at a crossroads. My 2012 Nissan GT-R was badly totaled back in January. Some idiot wasn't paying attention when traffic came to a stop and nailed 2 cars into me and pushed me into another car. Photos from the wreck (http://imgur.com/a/Os8Nk). It doesn't look as bad as it actually was. The outcome was $46K in damage to my old GT-R... and a stiff neck.

I collected my check from insurance and decided it was time to tame another beast. I landed on a 2009 997.1 cabriolet.

I've had a string of nice cars over the last 10 years, but after the GT-R accident, I no longer enjoy driving one around. I'm constantly looking over my shoulder thinking that I'm about to get hit again. It just takes the fun out of driving a nice Porsche Turbo. I'm much happier riding around in my built Jeep Wrangler (it would almost be funny if someone rear-ended me... the Jeep is a tank).

Long story short, I'm stuck with a pristine 2009 997.1 that I want to sell. Here's where I need your advice...

I've never been fond of stock cars. The second I bought the 997.1, I started buying mods. Fortunately, to-date, I've only installed a set of $5K OZ Superforgiata wheels. The rest of the gear is still sitting at the tuner's shop. I can easily remove the OZ wheels and sell them separately, replacing them with the OEM wheels sitting my garage. Since they only have a few hundred miles on them, I imagine I'll only lose a grand or less selling them.

My AWE exhaust, Protronic tune, sachs 2.5 cluth and fly wheel, and drop-in air filers are still sitting in their original boxes at the tuner's shop. Is there a market to sell these parts or am I up a creek without a paddle?

I don't think you'll have too much trouble selling the parts. In fact if you PM what you're looking for I might be interested in the Sachs 2.5.

I would be more scared in the wrangler but thats me. Rear ending the jeep would probably flip it. Actually anything other than falling off the trail would be worse in the jeep. I mean if you scared to be rear ended maybe an 18 wheeler? If you have the time you will minimize loses, but no one is gonna want to pay close to new for a "used" part.

If you sell with the car you will lose it all.

Sorry to hear about the GT-R. I agree, you should have no trouble selling the car but will take a loss on the parts unless you can return them to the original retailer/distributor. Most non-electrical parts are returnable unless you've been sitting on them too long.

Man, I know how you feel. I live in the DC area and as much as I love my 997.1 I am thinking of getting rid of it since I am afraid of driving it around here. Unfortunately I actually installed all of my parts so I'll take a hit. There's definitely a market for those parts, especially if they are new. If you can't return them, take a few hundred bucks off and they will sell quickly.

I guess I'll be the one to say it... if you're not getting any joy out of driving your car because of an irrational fear (phobia) then the solution is to fix the fear, not get rid of the car. These are very safe cars (I feel safer in my Porshce than any of my other cars simply due to the amount of control I feel that I have) and very easily replaceable.

Don't give in to an irrational fear! If you want to get that joy back, a shrink is your solution (don't knock it 'till you've tried it). And no, I'm not a shrink but I have had experience with irrational fears.

maybe you just need a little more time to get over the accident ? unless you really need the money right now i would hang onto it for a while longer and try and 'get back on the horse'

Very good points. I recognize a lot of us get emotionally involved with our cars - BTDT - but in the end they are just machines, made to be driven and not just locked-away all the time! Certainly having good insurance and good driving skills (situational awareness and car control) can help minimize anxiety. Having a beater or two for routine commuting is also not a bad idea.

Thank you to all for the terrific advice. I'm speaking with my tuner about a potential return of the parts. If the return option will not work, then I'll knock 10% off the price and try to sell them here.

I'm already getting a lot of interest in the car. It might sell faster than I originally thought. I guess it is the right time of the year to be selling a convertible sports car in Denver.

I had a run in with a median in my 2009 997.1 coupe after sliding on black ice. Totaled. Although I miss her - my new truck is going to do the trick for the next few years. Nothing wrong with taking a breather and driving something different, I'll be back in a 911, but just having different fun now.

I had a bunch of parts that were ridiculously easy to sell. Tires/Wheels/Exhaust/RoofRack. In fact the demand was very solid.

As for the car - again - should be an easy sell.

Good luck. And as someone pointed out - the 911s are great cars - as bad as mine was damaged, I walked away with some sternum/rib bruising and a stiff neck.

How did you sell the parts? I'm going to start looking for buyers on Monday.
