Clutch question - hold up with mods?

I read somewhere here on this forum, the stock clutch will begin to slip at some HP levels. I only have a GMG exhaust and IPD plenum, but I'm thinking of an FVD flash (my dealer will allow it under the CPO and will do the install/flash). I'm wondering if I will have any clutch issues at 550+? HP with my mods.

I know of cars with slipping clutch that are stock (driver error) but assume that a flash only car could start slipping as well but just sooner.

Think this is at a low mod-level a lot about driver style/ability, I am trying to be mentally prepared for the stage 2.5 upgrade

True and understood, but my car has 3,400 miles so unlikely the clutch is bad on it. I bought it with 3,181 miles and I'm not speed racer, but I can shift adequately.

you may be ok with an fvd tune for a while because their powerband is more linear than say... a GIAC or APR tune which gives you monster torque down low (thats what kills clutches).

"FVD flash (my dealer will allow it under the CPO and will do the install/flash)."

What dealer, I have a CPO also and would love to do it but my dealer said that any flash would void my CPO warranty. I asked how Porsche would know and they said any big repairs of the motor or trans they request the computer info and if shows to have been altered Porsche would not pay for the warranty repair. Now if it were my AC seats failed and had to be replaced they would but if I blew my motor and had a tune I would be screwed because of the tune.

Town Porsche in Englewood NJ where I purchased the car. The dealership keeps the controller and flashes it, which is the caveat I guess.

Just read a great series of posts about the FVD on Rennlist and how easy it is to install and they just had a sale for Valentines day for $1,197. Seems it is a great upgrade but again it seems that Porsche will not warranty this if your motor blows and they can tell if the computer has been flashed. My guess is that Englewood keeps the controller so if it does break they can flash it back so PCNA will get the data after it has been flashed back. Just hope PCNA does not investigate it too much or you breakdown and take it to another dealer who will not flash it back. You better get their guarantee in writing from Porsche of Englewood.

I have the emails of them telling me it's ok I am not ready to do it as I have only driven the car a few times, but I will be sure to ask more questions.

I'm running Cobb stage1 93 on stock clutch with no issues, but I only had it for a short time, planning to switch to stage2 93 once I get the new O2 sensors on the Kline exhaust and then 1000cc injectors and a stage3 E85 tune, at stage3 I am 100% sure my clutch is toast...

Love the "switch map whenever" approach of the Cobb, sure its true for the FVD device as well.

Just get the tune…your clutch will be fine. If by SOME slim chance it begins to slip (it won't)…then get a sachs 2.5! Easy. Next time your there say hi to Mark for me!

Agree with getting the tune and trial basis but, I got the tune and had major slipping. When the clutch was removed for replacement, it had shown disc slippage (not like that was noticeable from the wheel.)

Small mods can do a lot on these cars. Be careful on your direction as it may lead to more "unexpected" expense, such as the clutch.

My clutch is brand new really, so that was the reason for my question. I have 3,400 miles on the car, so the clutch is new. Yes, if/when the clutch goes, I would replace it with something more suitable. I like Mark as I'm through with my sales guy who I won't mention here by name. I'm going directly to Mark from now on.

Exactly. My car has 9K miles on it and has been modified (GIAC software and Tubi exhaust) for over a year now....the clutch has never slipped..not once. Get the tune and have fun! If it begins to slip...throw in a new clutch....wont be the end of the world.

Enjoy!!
