2007 997 turbo upgrade results

I purchased my 2007 997 turbo in April 2012. After a few months of research and discussions with various vendors (IPD (lots of great advice and technical feedback), Fabspeed (great customer service when I had problems with the CAI), ETS (cannot go wrong with their inter-coolers)) I decided to start my adventure in upgrades with top-end work.

My goal with the dyno work was to look at GAINS and POWER CURVES, not absolute numbers.
I don't want this thread to become another debate over dyno's or power numbers. This is all about improvement in performance with the upgrades I chose.

I dyno'd the car to get a baseline reference. The closest dyno to my home in upstate NY is Moon Performance in Lake Placid. Taylor Hoffman, the owner, did the pulls (his first Porsche) on his Mustang Dyno. All numbers quoted are in sport mode.

I installed the following parts myself (an interesting adventure since I did not drop the engine at all to install the plenum)
IPD Plenum (82mm)
GT3 Throttle-body
IPD Y-pipe
Fabspeed cold-air intake

I had R&D Automotive in Albany, NY install
ETS intercoolers
IPD Turbo Blankets

Dyno run in May-2013. A lot more torque, a little more hp. The dyno chart showed faster spool up and a bit flatter torque curve. It was clear that I needed to upgrade the exhaust and add a tune. Jump to April 2014 for the last upgrades. I talked with several tuners and decided on Vivid Racing ECU tune (loaded through OBD port) thanks to a lot of advice from Dan Mermelstein. On Dan's advice I put in new plugs (NGK, 1 heat range cooler). The tune went flawlessly, takes 15-17 minutes to download the original ECU file. Sent to Dan and got back tuned file less than 24 hours later......17 minutes to reload and the job is done, no worries at all.

I decided on NHP 200cell CAT exhaust from Maxspeed thanks to Nello Tropiano who happen to have a gently used system from his personal 997 that saved me some considerable $$$ (full warranty, new tips, and hardware). I wanted improved exhaust flow, nice sound at idle, no drone at cruise, and nothing to loud at WOT........NHP gave me exactly what I was looking for. Nello carries a lot great stuff for Porsche, performance and appearance. I purchased a front x-brace for the turbo and my 06 Cayman and tips as well. Top quality and great customer service.

Mike Gogan of Gerard's Garage (Cohoes, NY) and I installed everything over 2 nights work (don't even ask about the plug replacement......ACK!). Mike is the owner of Gerard's and an very experienced Porsche mechanic and owner.

STOCK: 413awhp / 429awtq
Intake upgrades only: 445awhp (+22hp) / 484awtq (+55tq)
Add Exhaust + tune: 500awhp (+87hp) / 545awtq (+116tq) corrected
Estimated final numbers at fly-wheel (assuming 20% loss): ~625hp/675tq

The dyno curves show a significant change in torque, very flat at/near peak torque from ~3400 to 4300 rpm. Steeper hp curve out to 6100rpm. VR quotes improvements of ~100hp/100tq with the ecu tune. Results are close on hp and overachieved in torque. I believe the better torque numbers are due to the significant improvement in intake air-flow and lower temperature with my chosen upgrade package.

Performance on the road is simply amazing. Smoother and much faster acceleration, faster spool up....wow, this thing is much quicker now with all the goodies. I LOVE this car even more than before.....

One interesting obserervation was the second run on the dyno, first made in sport mode. Taylor cut-off the run at ~5000rpm due to concern over the A/F running up to 14.5. He has no Porsche experience and was concern about leaning the car out tool much. Torque on that run came out at 577ft-lb. The second run in sport mode was done out to 6100rpm with the hp/tq numbers quoted above. We suspected heat soak reduce the overall result despite 2 fans on front and 1 each on inter-coolers.

I have attached the run sheets for sport mode with all 3 curves and the run sheet from the aborted, higher torque run. I also added a link to video of the final dyno run.

I appreciate all of the help from VIVID RACING, IPD, Fabspeed, Maxspeed, R&D Automotive, Gerard's Garage, and Moon Performance.

Glad to see there is a Porsche scene here in Albany! I thought it was non-existent; I'll definitely be checking out Bavarian Rocket Science (R&D Automotive) shortly...

Good crew.......they work on Porsches from all eras.

I also recommend Mike Gogan, an excellent Porsche mechanic. He has owned and worked on everything from 930 to 997 GT3.

While it is tempting, I am happy with this setup. There are few places where I can (legally) use all this power (safely) on the street. I have tracked the car twice (PCA DE), at Lime Rock Park in CT., in the 2 years I have owned it. It is awesome on a track. I may try some runs at the drag strip just to see what numbers I can pull.

Going further with mods gets exponential in cost. I would rather focus on my 06 Cayman track/AutoX car at this point.
