Vboxed: Proto vs upsolute tune / stock exhaust vs fabspeed 200 cell straight pipe
Vboxed: Proto vs upsolute tune / stock exhaust vs fabspeed 200 cell straight pipe
As I am planning/deciding on a nice package for my newly acquired 997T, I decided to do some 60-130 times as a base line to see where I am at.
The only reason I purchased the VBOX when I had my 996 is to see real world performance increases and not just "the best down hill, bang my gear box out, stripped car for the run, wind behind me, vodo technics times..... but to see what if any a certain mods gave me power wise and or different shifting points in real world situations.
All my runs were down the same road, start around 38-40mph, start in 3rd gear, take 3rd to around 6300rpm, 4th to 7000/130mph, drive around a very big block to cool down and come around again and do it again. I took a three pull average and came out with the 60-130. I am looking for a repeatable consistent way to measure so I can see real time difference. I run Sunoco Ultra 94 with a bottle of NOS Racing Formula Octane booster per 40 litres of fuel (I put that in my fuel just to make sure that I always have at least 94points in the tank), full weight, no brake boosting.
For a reference this was the starting point POWER mod wise for the car & this is the way I bought it:
1.
GT3 Throttle Body
IPD Competition Intake Plenum 82mm
EVOMS under drive pulleys
EVOMS diverter valves
UpSolute tune (only boosting 0.8-0.9BAR..MIGHT HIT 1BAR FOR A SPLIT SECOND)
BMC Air filter
Sprint Booster
STOCK EXHAUST
= 8.92 (8.9, 9.00, 8.85) avg. temperature of 12c
2. **avg. 0.34 sec quicker with the Fabspeed catted straight pipes**
Added FabSpeed Straight pipes with HJS 200 Cell cats (sold this already waiting for my order with SpeedTech 3" X catless race exhaust! Will do another 60-130 times to see the difference between the two exhaust.)
= 8.58 (8.6, 8.55, 8.6) avg. temperature 6c
3. **.43 sec quicker with the Protomotive tune vs Upsolute & in 10c warmer weather!**
Protomotive canned tune (we didn't go back and forth data logging etc) at 1.1-1.2 BAR
= 8.15 (8.15, 8.15, 8.16...did a 4th gear only and it did 8.19) avg temperature 15c
Proto tune with the higher boost knocked off almost .5SEC from my 60-130 times to 8.15 over the Upsolute!! I did the Upsolute tune at 6degrees and did the proto pulls at 15degrees as well, so it is most likely more then just .5 off it all conditions were the same (but everything else was the same, ie, road, same start speed, same shifting). All my runs were 8.15, 8.15, 8.16, 3-4th gear and 8.19 with just 4th!!! Talk about consistent!!+ I didn't kill it, or go down a 3% slope, or brake boost....so I know if I tried I would be 7.9's with only 17psi of boost!! The boost slowly climbs up and does not hammer to 17psi's so I know if we were logging and re-tuning there is power under the curve as well & more boost to be had overall!
I am confident if I was not doing anything further and we were keeping my same set up with stock turbo's etc, we can get it down to 7.6-7.7 with logging and tuning back and forth!!
REAL WORLD TESTING aka THE STREETS!:
My uncle has a 03 911 with the X50 package (unknown tune, but what ever it is, it runs hard for just a tune) running about 1.0-1.1BAR. The first time we ran with my FabSpeed straight pipes I BARELY beat him 1 to 1.5 cars. After the the Protomotive tune it went to over 4-5 cars with out much effort!
Todd also gave me a 1.5BAR 109octane tune to play around with! I do not plan to be driving around with 109 so it is not that meaningful to me, but I have a feeling that with the stock turbos and this race fuel tune I might be able to come close to my pump gas 996 Billet K16 tuned car @ 7.45sec! (BTW that 7.45 sec was taking down from a roll by 4-5+car lengths 700+RWHP mustangs, modded GTR's by many lengths, stock Zr1 by many many cars etc,.... so that is why I don't do direct comparisons with other cars 60-130 and use this for a tuning tool for MY car and set up)
I am just having fun until I choose my set up & then I would see where my 60-130 settle at and more importantly where this car settles up on the streets!!
PS: Shout out to Todd for hooking me up with a "temporary / hold me over" tune, so I don't have to suffer with complete "power withdrawals" with these stock
snails!
**VP109 RACE FILE UPDATE JUNE 17:
**.92 sec quicker with the Protomotive MS109 tune (WITH A SLIPPING CLUTCH AND BABIED DRIVIN) vs Protomotive pump tune **
Protomotive canned tune (we didn't go back and forth data logging etc) at 1.4 -1.5 BAR (STOCK GAUGE ONLY GOES UP TO 1.2 SO I couldn't validate and didn't feel like pulling out my Durametrics that night)
= 7.23 (2nd gear started at 50mph, slow shift to 3rd, clutch slipped going into 3rd for about 1000rpms) avg temperature 17c (WITH OUT A SLIPPING CLUTCH A 6.9 OR BETTER TIME IS IN IT FOR SURE!!)
Thanks

Thanks you.
I have been following your thread with your stages upgrades as well. I am most impressed with you knocking off 0.4sec with just your AWE intercooler upgrade OVER YOUR 997.2 intercoolers. There is so many "bench" test with these 997.2 cores that say they are the best thing since slice bread, but no real world testing on the streets such as this. This is the reason I didn't want to put the 997.2 cores into my car, pay for labour and the product, when on the streets in real life a good 3.5" aftermarket pulled down over 0.4sec on the 997.2....that is real performance advantage proven and would equal about 3 car lenghts on the streets! I would rather put my money on this intercooler and this is not even looking at the larger offerings (TPC,Proto,AMS etc).
When are you going to be doing your race file 60-130's?
Again nice numbers your self!
With EPL being one of the premier tuners out there and with their custom dyno tune on your car, your number should be strong!
PLEASE POST ASAP!!
Thanks you.

One of the factors that the AWE IC's are gaining good numbers is because of our weather, the tropic has good warm weather for all year but on our turbo cars heat soak is very often. So maybe in your area it will gain different
Here is a link to my old thread where I compared my car stock vs my car with Proto tune vs my car with Proto upgraded vtgs - https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ison-data.html
I guess I never updated the thread - with my latest iteration of the tune I did 100-200 in 6.2s.
I have the Sachs II.5 and it's great and the .2 I/cs seem to work very well for my needs.
60-130 with just tune was 8.2s iirc, which compares with yours (also with Ultra 94). Currently runs 7.2s with the upgraded vtgs on 94 octane

Very nice detailed information on your thread.
I was just thinking that a 997 63.5mm VTG upgrade package on pump gas: Exhaust, turbo re-wheeled 63.5mm and tune
Is similar in performance to a:EPL BILLET 16 package on a 996: Exhaust, Re wheeled turbo, 1 BAR wastegates, tune and 72lbs injectors (60lbs in the 997 do not need to be upgraded at this level). I was running 7.45sec and for sure had 7.2 in it, but I weighted in at 3360 (140lbs less) so it is still very comparable.
Just thinking that for not even a K24 based car (it is the little K16's) that it puts up a great fight to the newer stuff and it spools hard and quick...again just thinking out loud.
I wonder if your times would be much different with a 68mm wheels on your VTG's?
Again nice insightful thread.
Thanks

I took a ride in a friend's lightly modded 996tt (Proto tune iirc) and while it was fast it felt more like a typical turbo car with the non-linear acceleration...I preferred the more linear acceleration of the 997tt. However, there's no doubt that many owners here have gotten amazing performance from their 996tt cars with reasonable mods.
As far as the 68s go, stay tuned to this channel.

About the 68mm... That might make both of us 😉!
Well, well, let's see what this does on the Protomotive race file to the 60-130 times! I have the low boost race setting of 1.3 and the Sport button of 1.5 as per Todd on the race file!!! I should get 1.2 and 1.4 in actuality as each setting I have so far on pump has been .1BAR (1.5psi) less then what Proto had called for. Ie. My low boost should be 1-1.1 but I get 1.0 and the high boost supposed to be 1.3 and I am getting 1.1-1.2. Again this is easily fixed with data logging back and forth, but this canned flash was just a favor and supposed to hold me over... So I am not complaining!!
I do not plan on running MS 109 especially as those two 20L pails were $220!!! THAT EQUALS $302 to full my 55L tank!! 😱 Who in the world runs this stuff all the time and can justify the cost!!! Even if purchase by the drum it works out to $251 per tank!! For comparison it cost $85 to fill this 55L tank on 94!
I figured since I have the file, I would "sacrifice" myself for the love of the 6speed members, so they can see what it does for all the ballers that can run this liquid gold!! LOL!
I am going to run my tank empty and out in one of these and see where an am at 60-130 and I will keep the other pail incase as an emergency protection against any immediate street threats/call outs until my "package is complete!!😉
Times soon come, again please note that I do not enjoy this type of activity, but I am doing this as a sacrifice to my fellow 6Speeders!😇😉
