997.1TT Idle Sound

Gents,

I've noticed over the past months that my car seems a bit noisier @ idle than it use to. It's been hot as hell here lately so It may be that the 0-40W isn't up to the heat, but I don't know. I've included a video to see what others more knowledgeable than myself think. I know these are noisy engines so I might just be paranoid.

Cheers

Sounds fine to me when I ran 0w40. When I switched to 0w50 my car got really quite for about 2 weeks and gradually came back.

Mezger engine is notoriously noisy - don't worry about it. See this thread and the article I posted in #14.

Just keep an eye on your oil level. Sounds a lot like my last car (yours seems a little quieter). I don't hear anything alarming.

If I recall, Jbrennan posted a link to where the engineers tried very hard to keep that sound.

Sounds just like mine, which still has me listening in with a concerned look on my face every now and then after nearly a year of owning it. I don't think there's anything to worry about. Be interested to hear it with it open. Will post a video of mine soon to reassure you.

The ticking noise is coming from this. Unsure exactly what it is (I am definitely not a mechanical engineer!).
//Edit: Looks like it might be an EVAP Valve Solenoid. Be great if someone could confirm.

Cadence changes based on acceleration, seems to be present more once warm. Always been there, the car has been in and out of the service center for a few things since I had it and I don't believe it is an issue.

Fuel injection system. It's part of the vent line. If you had some work done on it recently, the tech might have forgot to connect the other end to the distributor tube. That's the black middle part in the intake were the throttle valve is tied. Reach behind and see if it is lose. It's a quick disconnect type. Ask me how I know, I have my engine disassembled right now.

Interesting. I've had work done but nothing in the engine bay for 8 months. I can't remember it not sounding like that. I'll check it out regardless. Thanks for the tip!

I listened to Auzzie's original video, and on second thoughts it does sound rather different. Much more metallic, and louder. I'd get it checked out.

The more I listen to mine, it sounds more like exhaust or pulley. I'll have my shop check it out just to be safe unfortunately they're 8hrs away round trip.

You could always flick them a link to this thread and ask them to have a listen first. Might help expedite the repair.
