Question about 997 turbo or 991 C2

I just ordered a C2 lease but I have no vin so there is still time to cancel it. I just drove a 997.1 turbo today. It was 27k miles 2008 and that car was pretty fast. It was nice too. I honestly couldn't tell it was really used by the way it drove. Now the inside was dirty and scratched up so I wouldn't buy that one.

But it got me thinking.......They were asking 78k for it. And when I looked around I saw a 2010 12k miles for 95k.

So do you guys think it would be a better value probably to get a 2008-2009 turbo and maybe mod it? So I would put the 2 carbon fiber power adder options from shark werks. The pipes and the intakes. So this would add some horse power. I wanted to get those carbon fiber mirrors and splitter that they have on their website. Probably would get some HRE flow form wheels. I don't know what exhaust would be good on this car. I wouldn't want to spend 8k on the akrapovic but the OEM exhaust sounded quiet.

The steering wheel kinda sucked so I would get the tech art one. Probably all these mods are around 10k total.

Or if I got the 2010 I would probably just make do with the tech art wheel and maybe exhaust or the power adders.

I'm playing with this idea in my head. Would save money too on depreciation, not that it matters so much since I was planning on leasing.

Let me know your thoughts. I haven't really done much research on the 997 turbo.

I just went through this process. I considered three cars that were in roughly the same price range:

- A new 981 Cayman S, nicely equipped
- A new 991 C2, stripped down
- A pre-owned 997 turbo

Ultimately, I ended up buying a 2008 turbo cabriolet. i found a turbo that had most of the options that I wanted, in one of my preferred colors and in my price range. It is quite a bit more car than the 991 C2. I take delivery on Monday and I'm very exited about it.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the choices listed above. You just have to decide what you want. The new 991 is beautiful, but I really liked the full leather interior and the power of the 997 turbo.

^This part is what I was thinking too. The 991 I configured came out to about 110k and kinda stripped down. I didn't want a boxster or cayman.

I didn't want a Cayman either, until I sat in a new Cayman GTS. It got me thinking, but it wasn't enough to sway me that direction. I never considered a Boxster.

The 997 that I bought has a fantastic option list. It's fast, luxurious and comfortable. It's easy to modify if you want it to be louder or more powerful. Once I drove it, everything made sense.

It depends on what you want. Once you are bitten by the turbo bug its hard to go NA even in the newer platform.

Regarding the .1 vs the .2, if you are nostalgic about the Mezger motor its the .1.

If you want superior performance stock and far superior performance with minimal bolt ons its the .2 turbo all the way.

I think it would have to be .2. I am new to porsche so no nostalgia here. I prefer the look of the .2

What would be the mods to do for the .2 if I wanted it to have around 550 crank hp safely and easily and a good exhaust to make it sound better? I don't want to lower it or change shocks since the PASM is fairly comfortable. Also would it have problems hooking up? The only thing I am worried is when turning and the pendulum crap happening since the engine is behind the axle with this.

I think that your expectations for modern electronics play into things also. My 2008 turbo has no bluetooth, no Sirius XM, no iPod/iPhone connectivity. If you want these things in a turbo, you'll either need to upgrade some systems or buy a 2009 or newer 997.

Does the 2010 and newer ones have all that? Otherwise I saw some post of a pioneer unit that I think adds all that and even a back up camera. By the way did any of these come with rear and front sensors for parking?

I'm not sure many folks on the turbo forum would suggest a 991 C2 over a 997.1 or .2 turbo. Responses may vary based on more information about what you plan to do with your ride, e.g. daily driver, weekend toy, etc. I'm assuming with a lease this would be no weekend garage queen, but rather something you drive up to allotted mileage.

The turbo IMO is a completely different ride. Sure it doesn't have the modern features common on all new vehicles but it does have ~480HP and ~500lb's tq. The 991 C2 is no slouch but can't match the acceleration and visceral feeling you get with the turbo.

Aesthetically, I have always I favored turbo models over their C2 counterpart. IMO, better lines, love the vents and lower body panels, AWD wide-stance, bigger wheels/tires and more exclusive (FWIW).

If you decide on the turbo, I would opt for the 997.2. You can get 6spd or PDK, and it comes with some nice updates such as read LEDs.

If it's not clear to you after several test drives what you want. Get the newest model you can afford and enjoy it.

Good luck.

The newer the car, the more likely it will have these things. It wasn't standard until the 991. Parking sensors were optional.

I've driven both. And yes this will be a DD. Has to be PDK. I'm done with manuals. And to be honest the AWD is very compelling because in Maryland it does occasionally snow. I like the feel of the turbo. Feels like my zr1 I just sold but is more practical. I just want to have it sound better and have slightly more power. To be honest I thought the .1 I drove would have more neck breaking throttle. Did they do a power bump for the .2?

Yes. The 997.2 turbo got a 20 HP bump up to 500 HP.

I believe the .2 had a marginal bump. Certainly the turbo S did, which would be my recommendation if budget allows. The bigger difference/feel comes through the advantages of the PDK

Did you notice if the turbo you drove had sport chromo? The clock on the dash is the telltale sign. This is a must if you get either .1 or .2. You get over-boost with this feature and IMO it is noticeable.

Aside from the exterior mods you mentioned, a tune and exhaust is really all you need. It will not feel exactly like the ZR1 but you'll be pleasantly surprised to have a car in the 10s with these simple mods…and this includes the .1 should you go that route.

If it's your desire to eventually go heavy on mods…you should consider the .1 platform. The metzger engine is the better platform to use as your base for big builds.

For the .2 if it comes with the center lock wheels I wouldn't change wheels. Also for that one I would change anything on the outside except a window tint and put the clear glass tail lights if it didn't already. Plus on sharkwerk's website it seems their exhaust and tune as you said would be all I need. But definitely I'd get the tech art wheel for normal looking paddles.

But yea the one I drove today did have the sport chromo. It had the clock . It also was labeled on the outside as a turbo S. I spent like 20 minutes explaining to the sales guy it is a turbo and not a turbo S and the previous owner put the S on himself. But he's all like no, it shows up on the VIN as a S.

How safe is the sharkwerks tune for the .2? Has anyone reported problems with it? The last thing I want is my out of warranty engine to blow up.
