Saw this on the 991 forum. There was an accompanying article which stated that the fire may have been caused by the gas station pump...cause was inconclusive and under investigation! Hopefully it isn't 918 specific.

They say the number 1 cause of fires at the gas pump is static electricity. In fact, there are 100's of cases of it each year with other cars. Now you've got that same risk of static electricity....in a car that has god-knows-how-many volts pumping through it.

I'm sure there's some procedure for "powering down" the car while refueling. We'll have to wait and see what the cause was I guess.

And on my 997, overfilling is easy to do. I always have extra gas on the floor.

That's an interesting point that I've never thought about. Aircraft must alway be grounded before fueling because they tend to build up a lot of static, I wonder if the newer car technology will end up requiring the same.

+1 Might be an unintended consequence to the hybrid cars.
