I was going to purchase a m5 e60 a month ago (just for those 8500rpm F1 sound) but I changed my mind because that car has a lot of mechanical problems . Just read a little on m5board , a lot of horrific stories with failing engine.
I had an m5 about 4 years ago and hated the gearbox. not smooth and the engine did suffer vanos problem so got rid of it. lost quite a bit of money on that car... New one seems to be bullet proof though, time will tell...
I owned a E60 M5 for a couple of years and loved it. The vanos issues are over blown as are the SMG issues. Yes I had maintenance costs but show me a higher end performance car that doesn't have its issues. The exhaust note, after putting on an RPI GT system, was to die for, the speed of the up and down shifts was very fast, the ability to drive at 400hp or 500hp at the push of a button was great. It was a very comfortable drive but could also handle the twisty stuff. I did install larger sway bars and sport springs. Bottom line is the E60 is a great DD, especially if you need more room. It's civil but also a beast when needed. Finally, they are a bargain now a days. Go find a nice lower milage 2008 or above and drive the hell out of it. You won't regret it. The only advice ill give about the trans is to get the European TCU tune, makes it a lot smoother.
I just sold my e60 M5 when the perfect '09 997tt fell into my lap. The sound Kendall993 eluded to of the RPI GT exhaust will forever haunt my dreams. Very few cars make a noise like that.
The car was expensive to maintain as you'd expect, but agree vanos, smg, and motor issues are far overblown. The smg in auto mode, to me, wasn't driveable. In manual, the car shifts beautifully WOT, but can be a pain in traffic. Something worth putting up with IMO but probably not for everybody.
EDIT: I should probably mention that the car was undoubtably the best road trip car I've ever driven. Many trips long distance with friends comfortable, still pulling like a freight train.

I loved mine but my shorter commutes and it's thirst for gas (low fuel warning at 180 miles) didn't really work for me. My 996TT made more sense as does my current 991 Cab - I use my Volt for the commute car.
Keep the 997tt and get an e60 M5. Best of both worlds! I agree with the other M5 owners in that the problems are over blown. High performance cars all have their gremlins regardless of make or model. As long as you keep up with maintenance (granted it's not cheap) you'll be fine in the long run. It also doesn't hurt to have an extended warranty with the M5. Mine has paid for itself 2 times over.
Loved my E60 M5, but get an extended warranty. Also, I never drove it in the 'auto' mode. The shifts are clunky and extended. In manual mode, the shifts are crisp and pushes you back into your seat. That redline is intoxicating.
I have BMW M5 E61 and 997.1 TT almos 2 years now.
Both are good cars, but M5 is stock and 911tt tuned, so M5 feels like family sedan and 911tt sport car. I choose rare E61 model, what is family wagon and transport every day children, go-cart, dog, etc.
V10 sound is inredible and seats very comfortable.
911tt is far more reliable than M5, but both are good cars
