How to tell if car is chipped?
How to tell if car is chipped?
I purchased my Turbo S months ago (used obviously) and was under the impression that it is completely stock. I have never driven any other 911 Turbos so I have no frame of reference. It was in at Porsche for the past week having a few things fixed under warranty. I get a call today asking if the car has a software tune in it. I say, no I don't believe so. The service advisor says the car feels much quicker than other Turbo S's they have, and it is showing some characteristics of tuned cars, such as blacker than normal exhaust tips, and a shutter/slight vibration when taking off when the car is cold. He says there is no way to know for sure unless I physically took the ECU out of the car. He just wanted to give me a heads up since he knows I recently purchased it. Does anyone know if there is a way to check this? Thanks in advance.
PS: When I clean the exhaust tips, I drive the car once and they are all black again. I assumed this was normal. He says it is not.

The dealer can tell when they hook the car up to the OBD when they service it or do software upgrades. I was told by my service advisor they always hook up the cars and the info is sent to Porsche for analysis. Now if you do have a tune it will not affect the warranty on the power seats or AC but just if you blow your motor or PDK trans.
If you "drive" the car, especially in sport or Sport plus the tips get black quickly, like in 1/2 hour drive. They clean up easily with some never dull or a damp rag if you catch it fast enough.
The dealer should be able to tell by reading the car very quickly if it is tuned bc it will not be set a factory settings.
Enjoy the car, she's a beauty.

I'd be worried about the capabilities of that service department if the service guy has to ask the owner if the car is tuned...as others indicated, the service department can find out with a simple OBD hook-up.
+1. I think I'd look for someone who knew what he was doing.
Funny thing for a dealer to ask, given that is info they can detect independently. That said, the dealer techs have the ability to "re-flash" the car back to stock anyway. If you want it stock, just ask and I'm sure they can accommodate you...

Guys....contrary to what some are saying in this thread, the average dealership technician will not know how to check for a tune with the PIWIS. And there are no flashing red lights and warnings that say "this car is tuned!!" when they connect it to the PIWIS. It is something they would have to actively look for, and it would have to be someone more experienced with the use of the PIWIS. Or they would need to contact Porsche for assistance...which they'd only do if it was a warranty issue or something like that. For a routine visit, they won't go through the trouble.
On the other hand...the simple way most dealership technicians can tell if the car is tuned is by monitoring max boost pressure. If they see anything beyond what the car should do stock, the assume (and rightfully so) that it is tuned.

Thanks for all the advice guys. What should I see on the digital boost meter if the car is bone stock? I will have to take one for the team and burden myself with finding this out tonight
I would get a durametric cable , scan codes , and log the car. It's not that hard to tell if it was flashed if you know what the oem target values are for fuel and boost for example.
Durametric I will also show how many times it was flashed but not all flashing options add to that number.
Get a cable as its a must for all p car owners. Start from there.

Took it out tonight to see what it does, and it holds a steady 15psi on the dash. The conversion looks to be about 1.0 bar.
On a side note, I forgot how dumb this thing is in second gear. Its crazy to think any yoyo with a couple dollars in the bank can go buy one of these. If this is stock, I could not imagine how people with modded ones are able to handle it. Maybe I just haven't driven it in a while, but it makes every other car (including the GTR) seem like a dog.
