91 or 94 octane

Hey guys. My 911 TT is stock. The manual says 93 octane is the preferred. In my area Chevron offers a 91 with up to 10 % ethanol and a 94 with no Ethanol. Shell offers a 91 without ethanol. What would you guys use? 2 point of octane lower or 1 more above? Price is the roughly the same.

force induction vehicles = the higher the octane the better (less detonation)

I would buy 94 if I could get it! 91 is the best we can get where I live.

94 with no ethanol and at the same price as 91 with ethanol? Where do you drive? In heaven?

The 94 while nominally a point of octane higher than called for by Porsche is the preferred choice. The lack of ethanol means you'll get a bit better gas mileage so this will mean you require less 94 fuel to move the car the same distance at 91 fuel. This helps to bring the 94 gasoline into price parity with the 91 gasoline.

The higher octane means too the engine controller will be able to advance the ignition timing to maximize combustion start for deriving even more mechanical energy from the burning of the fuel than it would with 91 octane. This improves the car's tractability and also helps increase gas mileage.

I'd say you are in a win, win, and win scenario. You lucky <static>.

Thanks! Mislead you guys regarding the price. Difference is about 15 cents more per Gallon. So yeah, nominal.

Still 94!! That is the way to go...Just put 1/2 tank of 100 octane oxygenated race fuel in mine today...$7.59 gal....and 32 degrees out! Runs like a beast :-) I did manage to blow off my intake hose at the throttle body....Nice sound at full boost....All back snug now.

A lot of older cars here in Canada. They need the champagne of gas!

The higher the octane the better the performance! I run 95 in my car and it has an EVOMS OBDII tune only. It put down 650whp and 633wtq. I believe fuel makes a huge difference.

Jako, we've tuned many BMW N54s in BC and have had a ton of experience actually tuning with Chevron's 94. I can tell you that Chevron's 94 really turned out to be poor quality. Petro Canada 94 though (formerly Sunoco) is far better if you have access to it and is the only 94 octane that we'd recommend over Shell's 91 that has actual dyno proven higher octane. Husky 94 is a little better but they seem to only have it available in Alberta and Manitoba as far as I recall.

In your case I'd highly recommend sticking with Shell's 91 instead of the Chevron 94. Let me know if any questions dzenno@protuningfreaks.com

Thanks for the information. I wouldn't know otherwise. I am sure Petro canada in BC is only 91. But I'll use the shell 91 for the 911 now. I current fill my 04 M3 with shell 91.

Run 100 if available. You do drive a 911 turbo right? Step up! I'm not into shaking and mixing gas to make abnormal 96.5 rating.

Interesting. With both my cars, Boxster and 996 Turbo, around town I mostly run Shell V-Power 91. Once in a while I fill up with Chevron 91. (Above 91 octane is not available here in CA, except at wildly scattered stations that carry racing gas.)

Whether there is Shell or Chevon in the tank I never notice any difference.

On a recent nearly 5K mile road trip I ran Shell and Chevron almost exclusively and never noticed any differences. Word I have is Porsche uses Chevron for its USA emissions testing/certification.
