Sports Chrono versus ECU Flash
Sports Chrono versus ECU Flash
All,
Its been a number of years since I last visited the forum, have been enjoying my 996 Turbo in the meantime, but now its time to upgrade to something newer, with less miles, and a manual (my 996TT is great but the tip isn't as engaging a drive and I miss a stick...).
I'm in the process of deciding on a 997.1TT and am considering a car with SC and one without (but has an upgraded exhaust). As I have flashed my 996TT which made a big difference I'm quite likely to do it again with the 997.1TT. But I'm not clear on the advantages of SC with the overboost - is it about the same as flashing a car without SC? The SC also changes the active suspension and the PSM - but for a daily driver are these changes only relevant for the track? I don't care much for the timer on the dashboard.
The car with the SC also has PCCB brakes and sports adaptive seats, and about the same mileage & price as the car without - however the car without is guards red which I think is the best color for a 911. I'd prefer the red car with exhaust & flash if the PCCB, SC and sports seats won't make that much of a difference for a daily driver (and I do use the car WOT enough to appreciate the extra power).
Also, having spent a couple of hours on this forum researching ECU flashes and I can't locate a thread comparing the flashes from the different vendors - has anyone done a comparison?? For example, flashes that emphases mid range torque for street, increased throttle responsiveness etc.
Thanks for the input!

I really like the Sport Chrono option. It really changes the throttle response. My preferred driving mode is to have sport mode engaged, but to leave the suspension in the softer setting. Adaptive Sport Seats are a must in my opinion. They are much better than the standard seat.
Sport mode improves performance over normal mode, but cannot compare to performance increases achieved with a flash, exhaust, and TPC's DSC module. Those enhancements really "wake the car up". Flash tunes and exhausts are a matter of personal preference, and have been the subject of many "mine is better than yours" posts.

take the car with PCCB - they make all the difference in the world and no brake dust. SC is nice but shouldnt be a deal breaker by any means. once the car is flashed power output is the same, you just dont have the clock.... i find that dash looks cleaner without it.

lol why not?
you get more torque and a clock. if you get a tune your car will make more torque and HP anyway.... everyone gets a flash.

Resale, not everybody wants a flashed car but when you know the benefits of SC people will pass over the car without for a car with.

Enjoy your search!

i don't know about that man but i see where you are coming from and will agree to disagree on this.
i'd say color, PCCB, LSD, miles, over all condition are more important. SC was a very common option anyway.

I don't think most of the people in the market for a 997.1 right now have much of an appetite for 14k brake jobs.
Ehh.. honestly as a new owner, PCCB was one of the very few options I really cared about, and I was passing on cars for having it. high relacement cost and very limited track/hard driving life meant I wanted Steel from the get go. I know you can convert back to steel after the rotors were worn out but I didn't want to deal with it.

Thanks guys for all the feedback.
Definitely not interested in $14K brake jobs (I live in Australia so that cost is likely to be more like $25K with the huge Porsche tax we pay here....) but for a daily driver where the car has not been tracked PCCB sounds like it should be fine.
Does engaging SC offer an additional more aggressive setting for PSM and the suspension over a car without?
Is the consensus that a flash will have more power and make the car more 'responsive' than SC?
I'll start up another thread about comparisons between flashes, I can't seem to find any objective opinions (lots of boosting by vendors & owners for their own flashes).

It may be different on a 997 but on my 996TT as well as the additional power (which you can feel), the car itself is more responsive and has better mid range torque - even for a daily driver it is useable (and I don't do anything stupid on the roads). Basically more fun to drive.
eh.. obviously it's all personal choice, but you have no idea what you are missing. The car is so supremely competent stock@480hp really isn't that exhilarating. Tune really wakes it up.
