2007 TT - Coolant Leak - Advice Please

Thanks for looking at my post - Although this is my 4th Porsche - It's my first turbo - 2007 / 997tt tip - 37K mile - At any rate, just discovered a coolant leak - local guy - who does not work on P-cars said he sees a pin hole in one of the hoses - pain, cause it creates a puddle every time I shut down (not a huge puddle - but a fair amount) sprays on the drive belt, causing a god awful squeak. Other than that, car is babied, runs/drives well - has not risen above normal operating temp...yet. My question: Simple hose replacement? AND of course ANY idea on cost if I find an indy mechanic??

Reaching here a little I know - but, folks here are WAY more Porsche savvy than I. Thanks!!

my guess would be you have a glued in fitting that is coming loose and leaking.

Sorry I can't offer a ballpark on the hose repair

There are a number of coolant hoses running through and around the engine compartment. Can you be more specific as to which one? Or take a picture of the hose you are referring too? If you are sure it is just a pinhole in the hose, they should be able to be replaced..

Thanks Gents!! I'll try and take a pic - looking from the back - left side obviously - next to plastic coolant tank - I saw the hose / did not see it leaking - but the mechanic said he did..I'd just hate to pay to drop the engine - if not needed?? ( not wealthy ; )

These cars are having these issues with coolant a lot now. I went thru the same thing last year. Seems that the rubber hoses are losing pliability. Good luck, I am sure its probably not that bad. Unless one of your coolant housing intake or output fittings are lose. Then I am afraid you will be going to the stealer soon.

Sorry to read this, I am experiencing this right now. As our cars age, the poor design of "gluing" fittings in high temp coolant circuit just deteriorates over time. No way around it, they have to be addressed, thankful there are better solutions available to repair the problems.

Started with a small leak begining December after every drive and she sat for the week. Took me a month to get scheduled with local Indy shop, and they have had my car for three weeks now. Engine had to drop, so decided to get all work from my Christmas list done.

Replaced rubber elbows with Sharkworks SS fittings fix, and had the other 7 fittings welded (part of the long time in shop) as well as all coolant line rubber, hoses and coolant tank replaced. Since engine out, also did 1 step colder plugs, coils (all were cracked upon inspection), serpentine belt, fuel filter and Motul synthetic oil change. Finished up with new BBI stage 2, 200 cell cat, muffled quad tips.

Certainly not an inexpensive month, but hope to enjoy her the rest of year, dry, trouble free, sounding awesome and running like a hungry cheetah!

What seems simple, gets complicated quick. Good luck to you!

Holy Cow - That's the right way to do it however! SO..here's the scoop on my car: Needs: New water pump, new belt, new battery, a coolant hose I believe (yes, Sunday the battery went dead - don't ask me how) anyway, it also needs 2 new rear Cont tires (quoted 300 each) Front tires are like new - inside of rear tires almost down to metal - yup, I never got down and checked & didn't notice any driving irregularities - All said & done....2500.00 maybe a tad over. Any thoughts gents???
Huge Thanks!

Water pump can go out at any time. Reads like the one in your Turbo has reached its time.

Hose failure is rare but a leak from a pinhole suggests a manufacturing defect which is a reasonable explanation. Hoses on my 996 Turbo are original (can't say the same thing for the water pump and radiators...) which is a 2003 and has now 132K miles so the hoses can last a long time. The hoses on my 2002 Boxster are original too and they have covered 288K miles.

Rear tire wear reads like an alignment problem. Unless you spin the rear tires around every corner tread wear should be even across the tread face. I manage 20K (sometimes more) from the rear tires of my Turbo (and about the same mileage from my Boxster's rear tires) but with a proper alignment. Oftentimes too much toe (in or out) is dialed in and this shortens tire life like you wouldn't believe. In one case I managed barely 8K miles from a pair of rear tires.

Get the new rear tires and have the car treated to a proper 4 wheel alignment. Be sure to get before and after numbers.

The cost for all the work reads about right. I can't recall my 996 Turbo water pump job's cost as I had some other stuff done at the same time. The water pump job on the 996 Turbo is "fiddly" and takes a bit more time than say the same job on my Boxster. I would assume the 997 Turbo is more like 996 Turbo in the water pump replacement arena than the Boxster. The water pump ain't cheap either and I always have the old coolant replaced with fresh coolant which adds a bit more to the cost of the job.

Here is a camera shot of the elbow that leaks on my car at this very moment. It's the second of three so far. I use my Cen-tech color camera to look into areas you can't see. Kind of lets me in onto what I am about to get into.

Well - just to close off this loop... Those of you who said water pump....correct. It was the water pump - had that replaced, new set of rear tires as I guess my last alignment was improperly done..inner walls were worn big time. HOWEVER, NOW.... just drove the car into my local Massachusetts inspection station - and it was rejected! Everything passed except inner right tie rod was worn??? I did not get to see myself - just dropped off and picked up (with rejection sticker) As stated, my car just had a complete high-tech alignment (of which I have the read-out) and no issues at all driving..oh well, taking to my P-car indy guy Monday to really check. (arrgh!) But, thanks again Gents for the previous feedback....The joys of owning a Porsche.
