Keep the modded 997tt or dip into 991 Gt3/or TTS ?
Keep the modded 997tt or dip into 991 Gt3/or TTS ?
It's been awhile since I posted here so to those who remember me I'd like to say hello . For those who don't know me I once posted here often and got a lot of great information which helped me with my 997.1 turbo build .
So now it's 8 years later since I bought the car and I still love the car. That's been the problem .. i just can't imagine letting it go .. so I keep it and rarely drive it (only has 17K miles) .
The other day was the first time I had a little doubt .
I currently have three Porsches . I have a 13 Boxster S which I absolutely love as my daily driver . It's a worry free go kart type of vehicle with the added perk of top down driving for South Florida . I also have a Macan turbo which is an amazing SUV . This is a great combination IMO !!
So the other day while driving my Macan I saw a 991 Gt3 for the first time on the open road . What a beautiful car and amazing sound !! That's when it hit me .. is it almost time to change or is this just a whisical car buying stupidity idea ?
Thinking futher --
1) I know I can't daily drive a Gt3 .
2) The roads in South Florida are dismal and senseless for a Gt3 even as a weekend car .
3) will I miss the massive torque and Hp of my modded Turbo ?
4) Then theres the expense .. keeping my Turbo is cheap .. (well it's not cheap exactly but it's cheaper ).
So why do I see the Gt3 and hear the sound and imagine it as possible ?
I didn't rush out to buy one .
There's also the 991 Turbo S . I'd have to trade in both cars to buy one and drive it daily and it makes no sense . i already have a Turbo and I realize the 991 is more luxurious but IMO a Turbo is a Turbo . In fact my modded 997 might even be quicker .
Anyone else think like this who is still holding onto his low mileage 997.1 modded TT ?
Anyone make the switch and miss the 997 car ?
Anyone make the switch and are happier with either the Gt3 or the TTS ? If so why ?
So far .. I'm just gathering my own thoughts on this .

Not sure what you should do but I would like to say that you have a very diverse garage and I would think meets all your needs? Maybe you are just itching to do something different. Also not sure what is done to your Turbo but maybe some more modding (exhaust, etc...) could scratch your itch??? My stable is somewhat diverse also just not "all" Porsche as follows:
DD = 2014 Lexus IS 250...very nice driving car for work, etc..
Wife = 2013 Lexus ISC...hard top convertible for nice Tampa days
Turbo = 2009 6MT and trying to decide how to mod???
Good luck with what ever you decide.

Hey there! Great to see you back!
I think you toyed around with the GT3 before. I suspect you know the new 991 GT3 is virtually not obtainable - limited quantities and out of production. Also, at this point, you should be able to actually drive a 2010+ GT3 at Champion or the like. Might be fun as the occasional ride, but this is a no compromise track car for the street. Probably lower than your turbo and likely stiffer as well. Most people seem to love looking at them in their garage, find them miserable on the street and sell them with a few thousand miles. They sure are cool to look at though and they do sound awesome.
The 991 turbo S is an awesome machine. Don't know if you've driven the 997.2 turbo, which I moved into. The .2 upgrades are not outwardly apparent, but were very significant. You can check my thread on the comparison. The 991 is likely as fast as yours and probably would handle much better on a track, without any mods. With the new suspension, the car is faster around the track, yet would be infinitely more comfortable than your car. If you look new, you know the ticket is $200k. Problem is that dealers are selling used '14's for ridiculous prices - and seem to be getting them. As a used car, way overpriced at the moment. Also, as you know from the Boxster, the PDK is totally improved in the 991 compared to the first ones in a 997.
That brings me to the next question - are you ready to give up manual? PDK on both the new GT3 and the turbo. I'm actually looking to trade my '11 PDK straight up for a '11 manual car. Not driving it as much and I enjoy shifting. Can you give it up?

I'm in a similar posiiton. Recently had my first 991 GT3 PDK-s experience. In short I was very impressed and have been poking around for one with buckets.
On the otherhand I also have a wonderful low mileage manaul TT that I don't think I'm ready to give up.
I think we should see some changes in the Market once the RS is released and more people like me experience PDK-S.

If you feel that the new 991GT3 or TTS is worth 100-150k more than your current car then have at it, I have decided it is not.

Interesting replies -- I will answer a few points made and comment on others .
1) I would not sell my 13 Boxster S or my Macan Turbo for a Gt3 . It would be the Turbo that would go . I love having my Boxster S in Florida . This 981 is a whole new ball game from the last gen Boxster . It's as if the Boxster and Cayman improved but the 991 was somewhat of a departure from a more traditional 911 . This is part of why i kept my 997tt as an extra car .
2) I see a Gt3 in inventory at my local dealership . I have not calledto inquire nor driven the car . I would prefer to custom order it and have no problem waiting if i decided to buy it but I still remain hesitant .
3) the 991 Turbo S will outhandle my 997 by a huge margin . I see the technology even in my Macan Turbo (AS/PTV/PASM manages this 2 ton Hp beast quite well) and Boxster s (PASM) . In the current cars Porsche has made huge gains in theit stock product .. especially with suspension .
I am just not crazy about most of the 991 cars with the exception of the gt3 . The Gt3 is IMO the best 991 has to offer ... but it would be a rare driving car as it's not ideal street car (agree with you Rye).
4) I know that 2016 will bring the .2 models . It's a good reason to wait .. Agree .
5) PDK is greatly improved since the 997 . It just happens that my Boxster S is a manual 6 speed . I chose a manaual in the Boxster and fel it as along as the Cayman have the last 6 speed box . The Manual 7 in the 991S cars is a different unit .
6) Rye -- it's good to see a familiar name and am glad to hear you are enjoying the 997.2tt . I agree with you about not having to mod the newer Porsches . They come well equipped stock .
So for now I have at least decided to cool my jets a bit and wait, look at the .2 991 cars and re examine this, and put a few more miles on my current cars .
The pause and think has been helpful and than you for the replies !!

Welcome back! I remember your car and the modding process you went through. Beautiful car. I went through what you are going through. I drove the new GT3 once and fell in love and took the plunge. It was hard letting the 997tt go. So much time, money, and effort modding it. You know what I mean.
Do I miss the tt? Yes. Would I make the switch if I had to do it again? Absolutely. The torque that hits you in the back the tt provides is not present in the GT3, but the sound it makes at 9k rpm is an experience everytime and the handling is unreal. The GT3 is plenty fast. You will also be surprised how compliant the GT3 actually is on the street. After back to back modded tt's, it was time for me to try something different anyways. Test drive one first and see if it fits what you are looking for. Either way, you'll still have a great 911 in your garage.

Yup same for me. I am not really digging the 991TT look either little to matchbox replica but I am sure it will grow on me. Now the GT3....thats another story.
Couple things to note about the gt3.
You can't order one.
No manual transmission.
I thought you had pdk in the Boxster, but I didn't remember correctly. I know you prefer new and like to shift. These may be deal killers right there.

2) I did not inquire about the car so i did not know it could not be ordered . I have been hesitant to ask or drive the car . i want to sort out my views rather than impulsively purchase a car that I admire yet have a tough time justifying as a rational car buy .

We'll see .. just uncertain so no Gt3 in my garage yet . I'm glad to see you are well and enjoying this phenominal car.
