I was considering using 5W40 or 5W50 to top off. I currently use 0W40. Since a top off may be around 1/2 litre, I would assume with a 9 litre capacity, it wouldn't be a big deal. Any thoughts on that?

 

Try to be consistent though in your current situation, no biggie.

Porsche in its approved oil document states that while the approved oils are miscible one should try to top off with the same oil that is currently in the engine. If this is not available then any approved oil is ok better than the alternative.

Can't imagine why you wouldn't have at least a bottle of 0w-40 handy. I run 5w-50 where I live and drive but on a trip back east on the way home I stopped in MO to get an oil/filter service and the dealer used 0w-40. I bought an extra bottle to have to top off with me. No biggie.

It is not advisable to custom blend oils. My info is the additive package of an oil is very important to getting the maximum out of the oil and by mixing oils one ends up with some weird concoction of an oil with an additive package that is half one and half the other and probably less than the sum of its parts, so to speak.

 

This will not cause any issues as stated Jako! Top up and drive on. If the engine blows up, send me a bill

Without going into a huge oil discussion (and I am not a chemist or oil EXPERT), you have 3 components primarily... the oil weight/thickness at start up ambient temp, the ability for the oil to hold up to the high temps, and you have a wear package (usually ZDDP)...

Thanks Rock. Was only thinking of this as my oil was just changed with 0w40. Since I seem to drive 4-5k miles a year I only get the oil changed once I get the reminder, which is about a year. Within the year I burn about 1.5 liters of oil and I wanted to quite down the lifter chatter a bit.

I though topping off with a heavier weight could help?

 

Good deal...I doubt that little bit will help much, but won't hurt. Best thing to quiet it would be 5W 40 TDT (Turbo Diesel Truck) Mobil 1 Synthetic. Since it is "Truck" oil, it does not have the same restrictions as "Auto" (Comical...) so has quite a ZDDP package for anti wear and does certainly quite it down ( and won't harm the Cats)...I have used it occasionally and noticed the difference...especially at start up and idle.
