PROTO 63.5m 997.1 E85 vs 81 Rx7 v8 88mm vs built Talon & More!
CRAZY NIGHT OUT ON THE STREETS!!
First off I have to say I am just floored by this set up I have and have to say that it has performed WAY above expectations especially for a freaking bolt on stockish car! On pump or E85!
This set up has been dead reliable day in or better worded night in and night out! I have had many people question my setup and hp when they see the way this thing performs, thinking I am sand bagging them or my car has a lot more serious undisclosed mods to it! Power and tq under the curve makes this set up DEADLY on the streets!
I have put 4000km (2500miles) on her this year alone (I don't daily it either!), taken it to the track (road course, unbelievable overall machine there, MANY RSS components, gmg sways,WEVO Engine mounts, Pagid Yellows etc... & I was on E85 lol), drove the family in it to do groceries a couple times etc! Other then the coupler leaking by the GT3 throttle body and many times at the stock Ypipe to the throttle body it has just been like the way Porsche would of made a 680bhp(pump) or a 780-800bhp(E85) car from the factory. I plan to resolve this throttle body issue soon with a custom Y-pipe to a V-clamp (or EVOMS) and I would have a consistent machine!
I switched to E85 earlier in the year and have not gone back as I usually I go back and forth (like last year), but it is just a animal on E85 & am not paying $3.7L for VP C85 (even though the car runs even harder and more consistent with C85) anymore! Most likely will never see pump again since I now get E98 Drums (I mix it down to E85) that work out to $1.98L. I went through 2.5 drums so far for the season & just picked up another one!!
The car runs strong on 94 pump & I have yet to go down on pump! I know there are many people that can destroy me in a set up run, but all my random street encounters have been met with tail lights. Two of my big single Supra friends (one on a pump & another on pump and meth) was the closest run I have had and as per them it was a drivers race! I also had a 10 Gixxer Liter bike run me three times from 3rd to top of 4th & I pulled by a 1.5 bike lengths on him! He even came over to ask from his bike crew as many other bikes tried to run me as well and said, "that ain't stock!". Then I asked him to my surprise what he was running and he told be "Gixxer Litre, you got a fast car there!"! That was on pump, so the car is quick on pump.
Leading up to the runs on this video: On E85 is where things get interesting on the streets.
First of all these guys are long time street guys and are just cool and ready to run! I respect them all and know that any of these cars can come back and rock my world with more mods, boost etc, as I am not chasing outright power , but a balanced overall supercar machine that handles, brakes, puts powerdown, make supercar beating power & looks exotic. I might built a MK4 Supra, TH400, 3.4L single to deal with more serious street machines in the future. The good thing about our cars is I have nothing to lose running any of these purpose built straight line street machines! I win it is a surprise and if I lose well it is just a bolt on stockish 911.
3 weeks from the date of these runs in Mexico that are computer animated I was asked if I would run a pretty serious Talon pump and meth 32psi making 640AWHP as he is passing by and well we lined up! It was pretty bad for him, as I beat him real bad, as in I gave him the time to brake boost, then he tried antilag and gave him the hit. I would be gone by just flooring it & He would be a part of the traffic fast. Well this video is of him wanting to run me again and he make 720+AWHP on race fuel. Even though I couldn't get a straight answer from him what fuel he was running, it is safe to say he would not come out again on pump/meth after our last encounter. He did MUCH better then the last time so he was making a good bit more power aka race fuel.
One week before this video I was at a street outing with 1320 Video and one of my Mustang friends pointed out a older BMW that I should not mess with and "how it moves out hard!". It is a built 2.9L turboed machine built by a well know BMW tuner in the GTA that is part owner of a Dyno. Well guess which car i wanted to run, but we never got to line up that night and I found out later he wanted to run me as well. The following week when some one I know contacted him they arranged for us to run & that is in the vid.
The 1981 RX7 weighing 2300lbs with a freshly new V8, 88mm turbo, 700R4, tire and open dump. I met him that night at 1320 Video and he was literally running that night arranging how everything would be run. I ran him about 2 years before when I was Fab Speed 200cell straight pipes & Proto Tune the 2nd week I bought the car (I had the Proto's 63.5mm kit actually in the mail at this time! lol). He was on a older V8 with a 150 shot and ran 128 traps in the mid 10's. We were all shocked to see after he took the hit about 2 cars he didn't pull a inch on me and I started to do a light pull in 4th. Since then he upped to a 300shot and was running consistent 9.8-9.9 @136-138. Well since last year when I got my Proto Kit in I wanted to run him again, but was told he only now run for $$ from a dig. Fast forward I see him at 1320 Video with a 88mm Turbo set up with a fresh V8 in there! He wouldn't run me at FIRST (911 wasn't worthy I guess ...lol), but I set him up to run my friends DIRTY Supra Single...... well the video will show the rest!
All three of these runs were arranged the same night, so it was a exciting night!
SORRY FOR THE HORRIBLE FILMING at the end runs as my batteries died, as I just bought two cameras for that night and they were not fully charged! I can't believe the most serious runs of the night & I got from the recording from way behind from people that can't seem to hold still! LOL
Here is the video that my son put together of that night in Mexico and his animation makes it look like real cars are racing...lol! ENJOY!!:

Man that talon takes me back to my first turbo car. A 1992 Mitsu eclipse, they are insanely fast if built right. Your car is running really strong!!! That E85 go juice is a beautiful thing, I can't wait to start using it on my 997. Project almost done. Thanks for sharing the CGI videos

When you switch over to E85 at first or for a good while your going to think every time you hit it and that tidal wave of tq hits ..."I do not need anymore power for the streets...Actually this might be too much!"! Power EVERY WHERE any time...just a great power band!
One of the reason I did all my suspension mods/brakes is I wanted a car that didn't feel that it was just all about power, make the car feel like it can handle it and not overwhelm the balance of the chassis to much.
With the right set of bolt-ons and E85 your car would be an absolute screamer.
Great job bobby...congrats on all those wins..997.1 turbos are one of the best modding cars in the world...and your set up is fast and quick responding which means everything...I'm not comparing my car to urs as urs is faster...but my full fbo car with custom tune and lwfw...really puts the hurting on cars with way more power ...I've raced two cars this year..2008 cobra ported blower and supporting mods...and gtr with basic bolt ons but at the time he had way more power ....both these cars had up to almost 100 hp more...both driver were impressed when the races when they were over..porsche lays great traction and pulls like a bullet till 140 easy.....5th gear is we're my turbos loose steam and wish I had bigger turbos....have to say this car stays with me forever...
Trending Topics
I can't tell you how many cars (especially full bolt on Shelby Mustangs!) I shocked with my EPL Billet K16 996T not to many years ago... It is all about power under the curve! Your car is built well and could imagine how many cars it shocks!
Talking about response, I also have a ERP triple with a LWFW! (21lbs the whole assembly with the 3 clutch and LWFW), EVOMS LW under drive pulley, GT3 Throttle body with matching 82mm IPD Plenum. I had a instructor drive my car on the road course and he said he has driven many cars, race cars, GT3's and couldn't believe how responsive the car free revs. 2 or 3 times when he went to heal and toe he hit rev limit not expecting that quick of a response. On the streets that get you up and going quick and you always do not need to be "fully ready " to race, as you can just punch it and go. For IE. The run were I said the 328 brought me down to 2nd gear and then he just punched it. He kept going slower and I thought ok it would be a low rpm 3rd (3500rpm's), but my bottom end tq should save me, but last second he slowed down even more when I though he was going to go and I literally had 2 seconds to quickly switch down to 2nd (as he was ready to go) and bang he hit it! As I am an old time street runner and I usually would never go as the saying goes, "you chase you race!", but with the responsiveness of the whole set up I just sank my foot in it. It took me awhile to get around because he took the hit and was ready verses the opposite for me, but still managed to hang somewhat down low before fully waking up!
In all these runs I gave them the hit, let them get ready with brake boosting (you can see the Talon doing that as it pours out exhaust through the Supra headlights) and all I did was floor it! Response, low end tidal wave of TQ and power under the curve did the rest! My old 996 I could of brake boost which would literally pull 1.5-3+ cars on big cubed/charged machines, but for some reason (and for the rods as I am making ALOT more power then my 996 now) when I brake boost it would limit my boost to only 1BAR as if the computer is freaking out. I Would get Todd to look into this, but again the amount of TQ the car feels it has down low I would rather leave that alone until an engine build ...LOL!
My Single Supra friend ran me on pump and they couldn't get over my low and mid range tq. They said it was just crazy and if they were not fully ready in gear and brake boosting or anti lag I would be gone as in a different postal (zip for you Americans) zone!! All I would do is give them the hit and I would just floor it and I gone. Compared to when they are ready brake boosting in their sweet spot it would be a drivers race, but even then I would still get 1/2 to 1 car on them. The one in the video that is in a completely different league power wise from me, said he used my car as a bench mark for med range and if he can keep with in 1-2 cars behind from 2-3 gear he is happy as his top end just levels me standing still (as you can see in the vid).
For the streets one of the other BIG things is boost recovery and you would figure for such small turbo that our VTG would be good, but it is terrible! One of a night and day change in this department for me was dumping the stock coolers and going with the ETS's! MAN NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE in boost recovery before shifts!! I grab the next gear and it feels the gear is sucked into the next cog, as the turbos are already running and passing the baton to another runner... lol. Seriously, it is just Bang boost again like it never left .....very impressed with that and even though I didn't pick up any power as I still have to tune for the new coolers, the car in a 2-4 gear pull is just faster because of less recovery time. When I ran a GTR that night of 1320 Video I kept saying Dual clutch WHAT!!! Believe it or not after the runs (handed them there butts bad and he said he was making 790AWHP which they were not making anywhere close!) he assumed my car was PDK (again shows also how ricer they might of been)!! This was the third person to think my car was a PDK after me running.
Concerning your top end, If you even do a VTG upgrade (they clip the exhaust turbine to help aid in flow up top as well) you will see a big difference in pull to redline and even in 5th. Since doing the ETS intercooler this car feels really strong in 5th even though I am rearly there.

When I saw that you only had 1 post, I was going to welcome you to 6Speed and then I saw your join date!
Put some fuel into your bad boy crank up the boost and lets go back out and have some fun! Very clean car by the way!
I see you use to be a S4 owner as well! My all around favorite car I have owned was my 02 Audi S4 AWE STG 3, sitting on 18" Ottigers many years ago!

This is exactly why I tell everyone that if you want a fast car lwfw is almost a must have... The benfit from the explosive power getting you to your power zone is unrealistic.. Best mod I've ever done..and we all know that Porsche manuals are some of the quickest shifting boxes../ that dreaded 1-2 shift sucks... But with me driving I don't loose much time on the shift as I still semi power shift each gear change...as you explained each shift is followed by a wave of power you prob. Slightly keep your foot on the gas to keep the boost up... Porsche manual turbo gearboxes can shift so fast it's amazing.. But then again you have to know how to shift.. For me manual always.. Or until I need a knee replacement...

Yours is uber clean as well!Yeah, I'm planning the rest of the supporting mods for this winters upgrade. This car as so much more in it, I've just been slacking and trying to enjoy it before ripping into it and having downtime. But 2nd year of low/WG boost is enough now. Time to turn it up and put a real tune on it.
Unfortunately I don't have the fuel system to add fuel and turn it up any more (currently just rocking a 255LPH intank pump on stock wiring) as I'm already close to the limit. So full fuel system is to come along with another few revisions to the setup so I can finally get the turbo out of the baby boost zone

Yeah my S4 was one of my favorite cars to date I might just have to build another one day!

BUT, I jokingly "hate"
on dual clutches because they are so deadly & efficient for getting a job done...that it makes a manual almost clumsy regarding out right performance and numbers for a given set up/hp.BTW I rebuild my 996 Turbo tranny once (I didn't powershift that car either) and after paying that cost for 3rd gear sync and some other small stuff....I FULLY RESPECT MY TRANNY AND NEVER FLAT FOOT, 1/2 FOOT, SMALL FOOT MY SHIFTS!! Full lift for me man, full lift for me....or I think that is what I am doing as things happen so fast and almost 2nd nature!
Seriously full lift with 911's,
Thanks man! You and I know that there is more power in my set up that has to be unlocked.....
I expected to see some killer vids from your beast by now.
What up man, as I know you were not having luck with your cam situation, is that all worked out now?
I have been waiting patiently for your new numbers on your new RobTune Tune and new found power!
Stop talking, give Todd K a call and get it done!
I have the inconvenience of picking up drums then cutting them down and it works out to $7.48 US GAL and that is a steal for us Canadians! To have it right at the pumps for fractions of the for-mentioned cost, all the convenience and not have your car switched YEARS ago (Todd was one of the 1st in the 911 community to do it as well).....you deserve any car that walks you on the streets with out excuse!!
...lol...J/K I suspect even with your pump car and your current set up not many get around you!
