Hey Everyone,

Need to replace my burned out GT2RS intercoolers. Has anyone here used the AMS intercooler setup on the track with stock VTG's? I do have a tune but would use a more conservative tune at the track.

If so, did they heat soak? If they did, how long did it take and at what outside temp and altitude?

Also, is this setup compatible with the Do88 intake pipes? I would plan on using the AMS inlet pipes but would like to make that a winter project if possible.

 

I have Do88 inlet pipes and AMS Intercooler setup, running stock VTGs, so it's def compatible. I have yet to do an HPDE event, so I can not provide feedback as far as heat soak goes. I have one scheduled for Spetember 9th which I intend to log all my sessions.

AMS is a great cooler and are on some serious street machines, but for track use have you given thought to Champion Intercoolers as they were designed for track use and have very high fin density.

I have them on my car and they are beast ....

I did notcise however that boost reaponse (lag) is incresed with the AMS units and the stock vtg ... Side by side with another 997tt with stock ic's they pull away quicker from lower speeds. These are big coolers made for big turbos, once I changed to an alpha turbo the added lag problem is gone as these new turbos can fill those huge cores faster ...

I would reccomend a smaller core (cms is best imo) if you will keep the stock turbos, AMS with aftermarket ...

Guess i overlooked that as a viable option. Pricing is similar also.

Per Earls report, the GT2 setup worked well, it just did withstand my driving conditions.

 

Useful info! Nice to hear real world experience with stock turbos. I was expecting some lag with a larger capacity cooler but, i didn't think that it would be that noticeable.

 

What other bolt-ons do you have? My car is pretty responsive even on pump gas.

 

I have the AWE IC's on my car, zero issues at the track.

 

I track my car 2-3x a month on AMS IC's on 100 degree days with high humidity. I used to get knock events, pulling 3-6 degrees of timing seen by datalogging on Cobb. I have a tune from ProTuningFreaks now which has been an awesome tune. With AMS IC's I get zero knock on 20 minute sessions in high heat, and my 100-200kph times at the end of 20 minute sessions is just as fast as the beginning of the session.

AMS IC for the win.

 

In the reasonably priced IC market, other than the 997.2 upgrade, the AMS ICs are the only option I would choose.

 

Subscribed. I will be doing an IC upgrade in the near future myself and need something that will hold up to track events - as many as four to six 25-30 minute lapping sessions per day at full throttle/full boost. There are a lot of high-HP builds here, but it seems like just about every one of them is for drag racing and straight line shootouts. There are clearly proven setups capable of handling 20-30 seconds of high boost, but what about 30 minutes at more moderate boost and power levels?

Do you think that the 1st time you installed your AMS coolers with your stock VTG's, that you might of had a boost leak, hence the reason for your spool being slower?


Just can't think of your turbos spool being "noticeably" effected by larger intercoolers.


Again, just a thought.
