08 997tt 6sp 2 owner 26k miles, purchase warranty or not.
08 997tt 2 owner cab, 26k miles, car is in very good shape, just wondering the forums thoughts on purchasing and extended warranty 3yr 36,000 miles for $4600.00. Question is do you recommend I get a warranty period or just let go without. car is in very good shape, service records and low miles, warranty doesn't cover paint items, clutch, brakes and such does cover, water pump and such. please help
How good are you with the wrench? If you are handy, and like to read threads on 6speed (Wealth of Knowledge on this forum,) I wouldn't do the warranty.
Others have the Fidelity warranty and most feel they have got their return and then some on their investment.
Regardless, sounds like a nice car. Post some pics once you take delivery.

I bought an extended warranty from the Porsche dealership when I bought my 2008 997 TT cabriolet. I never used it once, and it expired. It was a waste of money for me.

P.S. I had a warranty on the AMGs because I knew better, I made my money on them ten times!
Anything above $2500 and its a waste. I still think $2500 is a waste but for piece of mind, may be worth that to someone not familiar with these cars. Doubt you would ever have a $2500 problem on a turbo in 3 years. Unless you buy a modified raped one in which the warranty company will fight you tooth and nail to pay the claim anyhow.
No warranty here either as I mod my cars way too much.
as others have said, these cars are bulletproof provided they were maintained. They take a hell of a beating.
Reminds me of the old school Mustang 5.0 in terms of the abuse it could take and how little it asked of you in return.

I had a discussion with a local indie who's family has been in the Porsche repair business in this area for many, many years. I used a ballpark figure of $3,500 to $4,000 for warranty coverage on a 997 and asked him if he thought it was a wise move to have extended coverage. He also participates in national Porsche mechanics' forums to keep informed in addition to his shop's experience. He stated in his opinion it would be 50/50 if the car is manual trans - he expected a clutch job for many cars. He said the tip trans is bulletproof as well as the engine. He did not believe cooling lines or spun camshafts were statistically an issue (he has only done two cooling line jobs - one preventative and one on a heavily-tracked car - hasn't seen a spun cam). He also hadn't seen that many spoiler failure issues on the 997 (yes on the 996). He thought the most issues probably revolved around instrument gauges and PCM. In the event of PCM failure, he recommended going aftermarket for a far superior product at half the cost.
Of course, the point of insurance is the mitigation of risk. I bought extended coverage on a BMW E39 530 in the past and never used it. I can find $5,000 - $8,000 if I need it, so I decided to "self-insure". As for preventative maintenance on cooling lines - yeah, if the engine is out maybe, but otherwise "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is my view.

You're right of course. I think the mechanic was trying to come up with things off the top of his head, based on his experience, that might equal or fall within the range of the expense of an extended warranty and those were the three things he mentioned: clutch, PCM, and instrument cluster.
