Chain adjuster

Hi 997 owners Recently my 997 turbo and while starting up the car there is a noise coming from the engine driver side side ( left side) it's like a rattle and it's gone after 3 seconds also i gets message says "oil pressure low" and the oil pressure is "0" also that's happened 3 seconds ( rattled and message together) then every thing going perfectly , i think it's the chain adjuster of the driver side. my question is that's makes engine damage? Do I have to change the chain adjuster immediately? By the way I changed my passenger side chain adjuster 6 months ago . Regards

I have that metallic rattle type noise at startup too sometimes and no idea wth it is. It goes away almost right away and been like that for the last 35k miles without any issues. I wish I could figure out wth it is. Happens maybe once every 10 starts.

99% the sound comes from the chain adjuster but you have to detect its from the passenger side or driver side, btw I prefer to change both sides together

chain noise

I have noticed the same noise on cold starts only. It last about 10 sec. No warning lights on the computer.

Yup......i get this noise too. I've learned to live with it, but boy does it make the startup sound nasty.

The chain adjuster not that big problem if the sound ( rattle )only comes at start up and goes right away , but otherwise can damage the engine if the sound doesn't goes and still rattles while driving , in this situation you must immediately change your chain adjuster.
the passenger side is very easy to change, but the driver side is hard and may takes 1 hours with expert hands.

Hope you found it useful

Can someone record the sound they get? I have a clatter on a very irregular basis, for half a second most times. A tech mentioned that it was something to do with the system that builds oil pressure, and relates to a spring compressing and resulting in a small gap forming, so it clattering as pressure builds. Goes away as soon as oil pressure comes on, which is very fast.

The chain tensioners are dampened and tightened by oil pressure that runs through them. If your chain whips around a bit while it builds pressure it is probably fine as long as it goes away when the oil pressure is up. If it doesn't go away it could beat up and break your chain guides.
