Transmission mount install?

I picked up a pair of transmission mount inserts to install (from Torque Solutions). After receiving them, lowering/dropping the engine and starting to look at what’s involved, I can’t figure out a way to replace the current inserts. Do you just push the current ones all the way through the mount with some force, lube up the new ones and force it back through?

No instructions came, so any tips are appreciated!

Inserts,

Why do you want to replace existing inserts?

I've seen a video on YouTube about it, so try looking there. As I recall, there's a special tool that makes the job (pressing out the original and inserting the new one) 10x easier.

See picture below of where to pry out existing ones. Then press in new ones. A little silicone lube may help. Yuu van put a plate on one side and use a C-Clamp or Bar Clamp to press the new ones.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tips, Rock! Btw, I've been using your DIY guides to slowly pull things apart and upgrade the car. They've been invaluable.

Skwerl - Looks like there's some videos on YouTube and a specialty tool makes this a relatively simple job. Not sure if I'm willing to fork over $300+ for the tool though

Large washers, long bolt with a nut, 1 big socket to receive the pushed/pulled out bushing, i large socket to match the metal edges of the bushing but not touch the outer edges of the mount should work. The washers should be large and sturdy enough to cover the socket holes and not bend under pressure. Pass the bolt through the washers, sockets and bushing in the mount, start tightening down on the bolt. It should pull through. Normally there is a in/out direction, but the mount itself may dictate which way you go, but I would insert the new bushing from the same way the old bushing came out.

This is all if you want to save the bushing. If you don't care you can rip it to shreds and bend the crap out of the metal bushing edge and pry it out, just don't damage the mount.

Thanks Ed. I’m all for the DIY tools if it’s easy to assemble then remove the OEM part. I may call an Indy shop nearby in case it’s a cheap thing thing they could do.

I don’t really care too much for the oem part since I don’t plan to return it to stock any time soon. Is it easy to bend without damaging the outer mount?

I'm doing some work on mine right now. This is how it looked when I dropped it down:

These were crusty and useless although the mounts look OK. I've got new ones on order, and I may see how things feel leaving the mounts alone.

Given that you can buy a cmpletely new mount for the same price as the tool, I'd be inclined to buy a other one and add the FF inserts and call a day.

By the way, how difficult was removing the mount....looking at doing this same thing in a few weeks.

As far as ripping the bushing out, once you clear the rubber, you can take a hack saw blade mounted to a handle and carefully cut the metal ring of the bushing. You don't necessarily need to cut all the way through. You can even make 2 or three cuts if you wish. Then when you chisel it, the metal will give up fairly easily.

Thanks for all the tips! Way easier than expected. It took some force to get the rubber off, but one person “sawing” and one person holding the piece steady made this go pretty quickly. Then it was like you all said, get the metal piece to crumble/deform and then you can pull it out.
