AMV8 Paint quality info needed
I am not sure how many owners here have paint quality issues, but it pops up on various forums here and there. My question is — Is there a “safer” color that is less likely to cause any problem? Or better finished quality than others? I saw some brand new car with visible swirls.
Maybe meteorite-silver? a color that they have been painting for years? I remembered reading a comparison between how much time it takes to paint a porsche vs AM, is the paint job on AM paint by hand? Or is this not a color dependent problem. Thank you all for any input you can contribute.

I actually think the paint is very good on my AM. It does show swirls if not cared for properly but Menzerna polish followed by a good wax a few times per year takes care of the swirls. The AM paint is much better than any Porsche, BMW or Mercedes I have owned. I am very happy with my paint.

A good rule of thumb is that silver colors in general do a decent job of masking scratches.....black will be the worst! My tungsten (darker silver) hides them well and does not require weekly washings to look clean.
AM paintwork is top notch and by hand. The depth of the silver and the brilliance of the flakes in the paint is unlike any car I have owned. BUT I have heard they can do a terrible job buffing it out prior to shipment-leaving scratches. I like you was disgusted to find new showroom cars with swirls!

I too have tungston, an 07. My paint gets raves all the time from auto professionals in my metro, Detroit. The swirl problem seems to be related to the thickness and softness of the clearcoat. It, the swirls, is not a colorcoat issue.
I was concerned at first. My car is meteorite and it is amazing. I was it myself and have never had a problem. I was at a dealership that keeps some of the cars outside and the 2 cars I saw one dark blue and the other was lightning were both flawless. I think that AM as done a much better job with the paint over the last few years. In fact, I would put it with Bentley or anything out of Italy.
Mdc,
I think you heard quite a bit of advice here & on the AMOC.
In terms of durability over time - - my first AM was Mercury Silver that came with slight swirls, but this was dealer inflicted which I sorted a few days after delivery. I washed the car for three years with the Foam Cannon, 2 bucket method with Grit Guard, Sheepskin Mitt and a good Shampoo & dried with a Waffel Drying Towel. After 3 years/20,000 km it looked mint!
Now my new cars colour is the DBS Lighting Silver which looks much easier to maintain, was but blown away with the quality of the paint on this MY10. Regardless, I've having it completely detailed and protected in the coming days for long term durability.
Good luck with your choice, but at the end of the day go with something that makes you happy. That's all the really counts. The choice of spec'ing an Aston is mind boggling at times and can totally overwhelm you - but you have to live with the car.

hi gekko and all, thanks for all your feedback. AMOC is kind of quite. I was not aware you have a new lightning silver v8v, congrats! I like that color too, have to see one in person. Been thinking about the V8V since launch, but ended up with other car twice. I am waiting to see if the rumors on the minor facelift for 2011(same front/back treatment as V12 and DBS), and go from there. So far, I think any shade of gray, silver or white is good, all looks fantastic on that car. Very tempted to get an 2010, but by the time I spec it out, build and deliver, waiting for a few more months for a 2011 might be a better way to go.
Thanks - the newer car is such an improvement over my MY07, I can't tell you how happy I'm with the car.
I hear you about the dilema over 2010 vs 2011. I only pulled the trigger about 10 days ago, went in for a service and walked out with a new car the next day. Car was in stock and fully loaded, the colour really starts to grow on you, as I do LOVE my Blacks and darker Silvers. Everybody who see's it loves the colour and personally think one of the few colours that suit the clear taillights.
I'm a betting man and figured all that's changing is the front Spolier & perhaps the rear diffuser (which can easily be upgraded aftermarket) So why not enjoy a new car now, my last car was close to a 8 month wait after spec.
On thing to consider - you might be able to pick up some deals on MY10 due to the fact its getting some changes (that is, if you can find a spec that suits you)
Once again, good luck with your choice! Any questions, let me know.

omg, that is funny. yeah, the 2nd gen. looks great, esp now with ECU instead of the key... I go look at them when the dealer are closed. I am too weak for such temptation. ; D. They do not have any in stock the way I want it, but there are plenty around the country, or within the state. Have you look at the vantagecolletion for after market carbon fiber parts? There also a lot of 09 round too.
