Trouble Finding 1st Gear

Hey everyone,

So I've had my 2009 V8V for a little over 2 weeks now. I have a 6-speed manual transmission, and the one thing I noticed is that I sometimes have trouble finding 1st gear after coming to a stop. It's a little annoying but perhaps I just need to get used to this gear box.

Also, I don't believe this has anything to do with warming the car up, as I have this problem even after driving it for a while. I drive in a lot of downtown stop and go traffic, so not being able to find 1st gear easily after coming to a stop is a bit annoying.

I should also mention that my car only has about 3,500 miles, so I am not sure if things will get better after it becomes more broken-in....that seems to have been the case with my previous car.

All the other gears are pretty easy to find, although they are a bit notchy compared to my previous stick-shif cars (but I read that is pretty normal when it comes to this car).

Thanks in advance,

Eric

sounds like a combination of transmission fluid and shift linkage/cable adjustment. Both are common problem areas. Your 09 probably has the newer fluid already in it so more than likely its a mechanical adjustment issue

Thanks for the reply 007. Is it likely that a mechanical adjustment issue would only affect one gear? Would I be doing any damage to the car if I drive it around as is for a few months to see if it improves?

I already mentioned this to my dealer during a recent maintenance visit and, of course, I couldn't replicate the problem for them when it was time and the technician drove it around and said it felt normal to him....

Thanks in advance,

It sounds like there is an adjustment problem with your car, I have only 1,200 miles on my MY10, and there has never been any difficulty finding 1st

1st & 2nd gears have triple cone syncros, 3-6 have double cone syncros so that may explain why 1st & second are always a bit notchier than 3-6 when the tranny is cold (at least that's one possible theory).

Cable adjustment (and shifter linkage on earlier models) ... also play a factor.
