AMV8 (6spd) Stalling, fuel light one, no start
AMV8 (6spd) Stalling, fuel light one, no start
Good day,
Took my AMV8 on a drive yesterday which is to say I was prepared for trouble, as we have comedically name her.
While driving, it the car felt fine until it started to sputter slightly, ultimately stalling. Upon putting the key in and attempting a restart, the fuel light illuminated warning of low fuel. Off I went to grab some unneeded 93oct...
Upon my return, she took little fuel. I sat back down, praised the lords and she started after the third stroke of the key. I raced to a gas station, where she took only 2 gallons...
What gives? The story behind this car is this. She is a third car in a land where I only visit about 5 month out of the year. She doesnt get driven nearly as much as I would like because every time she gets turned out, she costs more and more money. Sounds like a woman...
I am tired of being hesitant to drive this beast. Can anyone shed some light on this situation.

I dont know this for a fact but is there any issue with using fuel with ethanol added in these types of vehicles?
The vehicle does sit for some time, on a AM trickle charger, without being started. My thoughts are maybe without the fuel being moved around at all the gas separates (dont know if this is possible) and causes the car to stall.
Other thoughts are fuel pump, o2 sensor, fuel line, or just sell the car!
THOUGHTS please.

This may be the problem but I will have to see. I need to ask my maintenance guy how hard it is to fix this.

I'd be thinking about fuel gone bad after sitting in the tank for 6 months. Are you using a fuel stabilizer while you're away?
Drive until empty
and see how it runs with fresh gas.

No we are not but that is a good idea.
If the fuel has gone bad, what should one do? Like mentioned I probably put 2-3 gallons in on a couple days ago.
I am leaning towards the purge valve issue but this may be a good thing to look at as well.
Thanks YVR

If the car is stored for more than a 3 months period..fuel stabilizer needs to be used. You've stored it for 6mth and haven't applied fuel stabilizer which doesn't sound good to start with, yet how long has that fuel been in there to begin with..when you visit every other 6mths do you drive the car till it's empty and fill up a new tank of fuel? If not that means this fuel is over a year old in the tank, at that age you might not even me able to burn down a house with that fuel even if you tried..little sarcastic but pls don't try!!
The hoses in the tank get gummy from being stored with the old fuel, so I believe your hoses to the purge from in the tank have gummed up and fraid apart which is sucking in fuel when the vapour mangement valve opens, next even with the valve closed the fuel alone is going to make the engine run rough..
Suck the fuel out and dispose correctly, change the hoses in the tank, buy a bottle of fuel stabilizer and add recommended amount per amount to be filled of fuel(check label on bottle, there not all the same), fill with nice fresh clean high octane fuel(wtv highest octane local fueling station has..91/93/94)..cycle key couple times to regain fuel pressure and start up, might take a few tried but avoid flooding the engine.
If after you get this running but the engine is still a little rough at idle and under load, change the spark plugs for they can be fouled due to the bad fuel and short trips traveled..
When you store the car, you still need to follow your maintence routines(weither it's a Vantage, a Ford Mustang....or even a Honda Civic), there are routines for even storing your car..just by not putting fuel stabilizer alone shows this has been ignored, if you follow storage and maintence routines, checks and replacement of needed fuels/oils/battery/tires/waxing/leak checks/starting/rolling to avoid flat spots...etc..Sure it costs hard cash and most parts/service are crazy costly, but how else do they get a 100k+ sticker price..if followed, problems like this will not occur and the nickname "trouble" will be a thing of the past..
Hope This Helps..
