Vantage 4th gear selection slightly stiff?
Vantage 4th gear selection slightly stiff?
Just happened the other day after I leant it to a mate !!! Never again.
Is this a linkage problem? Gear selection is fine once engaged. 28k mileage.
Build quailty on these cars are not very good imo. Another in a list of gremlins..

I'd adjust the cables before doing anythig else. There are adjuster clips on the cable ends near the trans linkage, unlock the clips (not talking about releasing the cables from the linkage) ..once unlocked center the shifter at best(i have a tool to align if I need, 9/10 I don't need it though) ..once aligned, lock the cable adjuster clips "WITHOUT" moving the cables..sometimes a seconds person in the car helps to hold the shifter in place ..Once adjusted try out the shifting on the lift and keep adjusting till you happy with it, if it feels good go for a road test

Well not knowing where they are could be a great task..With I knowing where they are, I remove the trans undertrays and pretty much bear hug the transaxle..I don't take anything else off besides the trays
Irish...
Hello mate, i saw a green dot next to your name... I hope this means your online as i need some advice regarding a post you made.
My V8 Vantage is in for a gear linkage change. The garage have taken 3 days so far and have literally stripped the car to bits to get to both ends.
From your post you seem like you may of done this or have an idea if this they need to strip it to the bare "chassis" to get to both ends!?!?!
Any ideas?
Thanks

From underneith, remove the exhaust and remove the transmission..I've done it with the transmission still in but lowered to the max..it's not much more steps to just remove the trans, so i do this depending on my mood ..lol..
From that point its childs play, any tech could figure the rest out..if I was to give you a labour quote..no more that 6hrs

What year vantage were they?
Mine is a 2006 and it's impossible to get to the part through the inside of the car. I called up AM yesterday and they said the same. That it must be done from
Underneath.
Perhaps the cara you did were newer models and therefore access from inside rectified?
Thanks for the reply

Then there is a plastic grommet that is attached to the body shell which feads the cables into the cabin..some detact the grommet from inside or from beneith..which ever works for you is the best approach.
Either way you are gonna be lowering the tranaxle to the max, or removing it for access of the cables at the top of the torque tube..which ever works for you again is the best approach..once cables are accessed, detach from the shifter linkage on top of tranaxle..fish cables out and route new cables in place...then just reverse all steps...again not a hard job, easily done in 6 hrs with nice gain time

Hope you get it sorted.
The first model of any car always has teething problems, they only test drive a car for a few months to try and break it.
After a few years owners always find other problems.
Im sure if i had a 2009 vantage and not a 2006 i wouldnt of experienced this, at least i hope

Yes I would expect the newer cars to be better built. However I know that the first 100 or so Vantages had stronger engine internals.
My diagnosis on the linkages was mistaken. I dont know what it was but it fixed itself and have not had issues again.
