Aston Martin to use Toyota Engines?
Jasper I have so many underlying issues, which one could you possibly be referring to?
Yes, there are modern turbocharged V8's that sound quite good, like the current AMG's. And I have fond memories of my old RS6. Always liked evo's description that it sounded like "a close encounter with some helicopter blades".
Drove a new M5 the other day. Impressive throttle response and linearity for a turbocharged car, but you could still tell it was turbocharged. And what a dull exhaust note!
Can't say I have ever been disappointed with low end torque of most turbos - in fact, this is one of their defining characteristics. The wallop of torque from the latest twin turbo BMW V8's is quite impressive, as was the hit from the RS6.

Fair enough...Regarding exhaust note - I believe this is a tunable aspect that BMW elects to have quiet for the average driver. BMW although sporty, is still considered a luxury brand, and may purposely be keeping the exhaust humbled.
It doesn't sound like that because it's tuned to be quiet. Apparently the F10 M5's exhaust manifold is a new design that reduces turbo lag. Unfortunately (for those who like a traditional V8 burble), the side effect is a sound like a 4 cylinder. My X5 has the same basic engine but a conventional manifold and there's no mistaking it's a V8 when you put your foot down!
Oh, you...!!!Damn can of worms...
Stop!
Interesting fact: the Aston Ford motors are built by Ford BUT, it is built by a special facility in where else .... Cologne Germany. So that means Benz is probably even more of a viable option since they are already being made there and shipped to UK from Germany. That's probably why Benz was such a natural choice.
I completely agree that a typical Aston owner (one who prioritizes individuality over the masses, luxury over performance (while still enjoying a drive), quality over quantity, along with the money to discern all of the above) would snub a Toyota block. Speedraser is evidence of this superiority complex.
) and as such, you’ve diagnosed me with a “superiority complex.” We’ve disagreed in the past, and our priorities with respect to cars (and probably other things) differ, but stating that I am “evidence of this superiority complex” is arrogant and presumptuous.

So, you have determined I am a “typical Aston owner” (

! guys relax... jaspergtr, speedracer is a valued poster, he's got good insight on cars, engines, and mechanics, he can get exctied but he's a down to earth guy...just like you. This is a fun discussion guys. lets enjoy the back and forth with each other, we don't always have to agree or see eye to eye...but I think having good people who like to contribute (like you two) is valuable for our forum...as a Mod of the Aston forum I can tell you that we are MUCH more civilized here then in some of the other forums my co-moderators oversee.
I love the linear power and the noise of my V12 Vantage, but I also have a TTRS and that little 5 pot is one soulful little beast. Big power, big torque, very linear for a turbo. Almost no lag and the power is just on. Some of you may not approve of the rest of the car, but the engine is a hit with almost anyone. So displacement is not what gives a motor character.
When you are on it,mthe sound is fantastic. But turbos don't sound that great when they are not under load.
I have to say I drove the McLaren MP4-12C and I loved that motor. To be honest I loved that car. Not dead like some have said, though I hear the cars have been adjusted since the early cars were tested.
I still think the real tech hurdle for Aston is not a Toyota V10. It's going to be much bigger than that.

I also drove the McLaren and thought it was fantastic -- a very special thing, and not lacking character. Not bland, not dull in any way. CRAZY fast, just insane. Great ride and handling. Probably too fast for the road, at least where I live -- it's just not possible to use its performance for more than a few seconds because you reach extremely high speeds almost instantly (0 - 100 in 6 secs), speeds that are far beyond what is reasonable on the road. I'd need the time to track it regularly. Awesome car.

No soul or character. Too many computers, nannies, turbos, dual clutch gearbox..., etc...
I'd rather drive a car with character, than be driven in a computer controlled technological wonder. How boring is that?
Who would want to spend $$$ on a car with a pedestrian, every-has-one, Nissan engine?
(see how easy that was? It is easy to have prejudice. It takes experience, or an open mind, to see past it)
