"Emission Service Required"

"Emission Service Required"
This alert just popped up on the screen on my 2012 Rapide (5K miles on it).
Does anyone know what it means or what in the "emission system" can be
serviced? Thank you.

your rapide is too new to guess on the usual culprits, such as the cats. Other than checking to see that your gas cap is tightened on properly, your best bet is the dealer. A diagnostic scanner would be the easiest way to figure the problem out. Whatever is causing the issue would still be covered on the standard three year warranty.

This is a common problem with our cars. Mine has only flashed it once and when I checked it with my code reader everything was within spec. All I did was erase the code and it hasn't come back yet (been almost 6 months). Definitely get a code scanner and see what your code is. A good scanner should be able to test the emission system components in real time to make sure things are working. The port for the scanner plug in is right under the steering wheel.

That message comes on for the weirdest of things! I had my rear bumper cover removed for painting, once it was refitted the Emissions Service light came on....Grrrrrr.
When, I took it to the dealer the on board computer had logged an error code to do with the rear bumper removal. The dealer reset and all was good.
Anyway, I suppose the moral of the story is get the dealer to check it as it'll probably be nothing of serious consequence, and he should be able to check it while you wait.......as Grout mentioned above; I would probably check that your gas cap is on correctly first though!

Although I've not yet seen this on my DB9, I've heard the common culprit is fuel filler cap. As others have mentioned check that first make sure it's properly fitted after fueling.
