996tt or AM

has anyone moved from a 996tt to a 2002+ AM, ifso, thoughts, etc

Are there any years of the AM that one needs to stay away from. How reliable are the AM cars, etc

Depends on which era you're looking at.

Let's assume you are looking at '06 and newer. In that case they are pretty solid. The clutches are thought to be a bit fragile but YMMV.

The thing that got me looking at AM in the first place was the fact that, among exotics, it's the only one considered truely reliable.

Yes, I moved from a modified 996TT to a 2007 AM V8V. I could not be happier. I love the AM sound and overall feel. My 996TT was crazy fast and handled great but I wanted something more special. There are a ton of Porsche's where I live and my car blended in way too much for it to feel special. The AM gets so many looks and thumbs up it's insane. My car has been very reliable. In fact, I had more problems with my Porsche.

Bad ABS sensor at 15k miles, the alternator went out at 16k miles, clutch slave at 18k miles, hydraulic pump to rear wing at 20k miles, etc. I must have had a lemon. I sold the car with about 28k miles and unfortunately the guy that purchased it from me had a cam bearing break and the engine was replaced by Porsche at ~35k miles. The car was in the shop for little things as well. I loved the car but it was not all that reliable for me. I know many others have had much better luck.

I have driven one form of Porsche or another since 1983 and have logged many miles as they were always my DD, and I love and will always have one, but my v8v... is very special.

Got it. My AM has been generally very reliable. The only real issue I had was a timing cover gasket that had a slow leak. There was a TSB for it and it was replaced under warranty. I updated the sportshift software with RSC TCU upgrade and really do like the sportshift now. It shifts very quickly and is a pleasure to drive if you get caught in traffic. I have had a few very minor issues (dust under radio display cover, squeky brakes, etc.) that were all covered under warranty but the build quality of these cars are real high. The paint is real easy to work with. I'm really into detailing. I think it's a pretty good bang for the buck.

You would not believe the number of people I have talked to who have gone 996 Turbo to AMV8....

You shouldn't find it any more expensive to run than the Porsche. On a par with running a high end German Sedan. There's always a few examples with any marque where there are extremely good stories and bad ones, but on the whole you should find the Gaydon Era AM's to be very reliable and relatively affordable to run.

Gaydon era = all VH architecture cars (DB9 & V8/V12 Vantages, Rapide, New (2013+) Vanquish).

Original Vanquish was built at Newport Pagnell & is a different beast. Amazing cars but can cost boatloads of money in repairs if not properly maintained.

totally 2 different cars, turbo Porsche and AMv8v not a good comparision. Maybe AMv8v and naturally aspirated 911 (996/997) C2

The 996 turbo is much quicker than the AM Vantage and DB9. I come from Porsches and these are completely different cars. The 911 turbo is an unbelievable car and if you can get a 997 turbo all the better! If I could afford both cars they would both be in my garage. Both are excellent at what they are designed for. The 911 Turbo is definitely the more exciting car to drive but does not get near the looks the DB9 does. The DB9 is like a nice glass of wine and the 911 turbo is shot of your favorite whisky (gonna get crazy).

A tennis analogy if you please, Would you rather play tennis with Anna Kournikova or Serena Williams? JFTR, I think Serena is a lovely girl. (Posted this to the wrong thread yesterday, my apologies.)
