Oil question

Have a good friend who is willing and (more importantly capable) of performing an oil change on my '08 Vantage.

Closest dealer (4 hours away....thus the "non-sanctioned" oil change) said to use Castrol TWS 10W60.

An internet search has yielded 12 liters for app. $185.00.

Is this about right? Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The oil and amount is right. But I don't know the price as each dealer may charge different. Good luck finding it locally, unless BMW is closer...lol

Your oil choice is, to a degree, dependent on how you drive. The best oils break down more quickly, the more conventional last longer but don't protect as well. I change oil every 4k at an indie shop, everything sans fllter kit is $238

007 "the best oils break down more quickly" Care to explain what this means? Send a sample of your oil to Blackstone Labs for testing. You may learn something.

George, you can order your oil from Turner Motorsports. You can find them online. They are a BMW race organization.

Always interested in learning. Some synthetics, particularly those formulated for racing, do not have the additives of others. Perhaps it could have been phrased better. And I am quite certain the lab mentioned has more sophisticated testing than we. We discovered through experience in our racing engines, where we were able to test oils in a fairly controlled, but by no means scientific way, that esther based synthetic oil ran cooler and stayed cleaner. The caveat is that we have been out of racing for a few years and there may be something new and better, also our engines ran on alcohol and usually only around 90 minutes per week. I am certainly no expert, however, put over 200k miles on three separate Porsche with no engine failure

I replace mine every 6 months I use Castrol 10W60 Edge sport Its not expensive and I recently placed the Jag oil filter compatible part number, on this forum for reference I do not do sufficient Km to bother with a oil sample test, but even the best fully synthetic oil is hydroscopic so I do it sooner than needed but clean oil is cheap insurance, and I like to tinker with my AM, because gynecology is more risky (possibly even more enjoyable)

Over in Europe we change oil far, far less frequently, and it never causes a problem. With the recent advances in oil, cars can have much longer gaps between changes, Aston Martin recommends an oil change at 10k miles / 12 months

Most cars are moving to 20k miles / 2 year intervals

I can't imagine that manufacturers would recommend anything that damages their cars, so you aren't going to extend the cars life by much, if anything, by changing more often.

Of course, it won't harm your car if you change more frequently, just your wallet (and maybe the environment)

George,

For me I change oil every 7500 miles or 1 year, whatever comes first. Everybody has an opinion on intervals and longer intervals appear fine. Most oil analysis support longer oil change intervals since the oil properties closely match the original formula. The analysis will also provide metals, so if something is wrong inside the engine it will show up. The 13 V8V requires 3 pan plugs and a crush ring for the dry sump. No screens to clean and no belly pan to remove. I don't know about your 08 configuration but I believe it may be different.

Mark

I buy the oil by the case from my local BMW dealer for $12.50 a liter. It's the same oil used in the M cars so they always have it I stock in their parts department.

2600KM = 15k miles, that's about what we should expect from a typical car now. My Audi A8 has done 65k miles and had 3 oil changes in 6 years, which is exactly as specified. With changes very 20k miles people comfortably get well over 150k miles from the engine. It's really convenient, not having to keep taking that car in for service, and it saves a stack of money.

High performance engines such as the AM will need more frequent changes, but they are getting better too.

I know I'm fixing to open up a can of worms but I'm curious....I thought I had found the correct oil at a BMW dealership (as suggested). After further checking they only had access to the Edge. Is there really that much difference? Sorry to be a trouble maker. Thanks.

Correct Oil is Castrol Edge Professional 10W-60 TWS. Also approved for BMW M Series.
