2008 vs 2009 DB9
Hi Friends,
I am potential used AM DB9 buyer.
I am looking at 2008 DB9 with less than 10K miles for about $85k vs 2009 DB9 with 16000 miles at $80k.
I have so many questions, I am very excited to be able to own AM but very nervous about what if car is a lemon or has major brake down etc? I was not even this afraid or jittery when I got married
1. Should I go for 2008 vs 2009?
2. What major differences are there between 2008 vs 2009 model.
3. I was concerned about "clutch wire" replacement cost but dealer told me that on automatic db9, I don't have to replace clutch wire. Is that true?
4. 2009 BB9 I am looking at is in sandstorm color (gold) with sandstorm and brown dual color interior, color is actually special order jaguar paint, I am not too thrilled about color but since deal is so good I was thinking what if I don't like color when I see it in person, can I get whole car reprinted in different color? How much that could cost? And is it crazy to think that or people have done that?
5. How to arrange for inspection? Car is located in Miami area with non dealer seller, do I just call AM dealer or does anyone have any indiAM tech/mechanic recommendation.
6. I don't hate the gold color but I am not in love with it, but I saw silver and I liked it so I am thinking gold should be good too.
All input with be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Welcome!
An excellent resource for Aston Martin details is in a book written by one of our forum members, http://www.astonmartinreview.co.uk/
Speaking for myself, I would never consider buying a car that has had a complete color change. The shift from "as original" is a turnoff for me. I know some buyers have similar thoughts. The quality of factory Aston Martin paint is very high, the factory spends approximately 40 hours in prep/paint work on each car. I'd guess to disassemble the car, do a complete color change, and put it all back together with similar quality finish is probably a $10,000 USD job.
To assess the prices you've quoted, are these Volante convertibles, or are they coupes?
The 2008 DB9 engine is rated at 450 hp where as the 2009 was upgraded and rated at 470 hp.
Quoted from Edmunds.com
"The 2009 Aston Martin DB9 is a bit more powerful this year as its 6.0-liter V12 receives a 20-horsepower boost. Other changes include revised suspension tuning (Aston says it's for improved ride quality) and quicker, smoother shifts for the automatic transmission. Torsional rigidity in the DB9 Volante has also been increased. Inside, the DB9 gets the same improved stereo, climate and navigation controls as the DBS, as well as its crystal and stainless steel "emotion control unit" key fob. There's also a sizable price increase."

2009 db9
The color was jaguar gold color but seems like original buyer ordered it at new purchase, so it was still painted by ATon Martin, at least that's what my local dealer thought.

A 2009 and later "Emotion Control Unit" key fob, used instead of a traditional key
And it goes here:
In 2008, the location where the 2009 emotion control unit goes, is simply a "Start" push button to start the car once the traditional key is installed. In 2009, you push the emotion control unit into the opening as shown above and pushing-holding it starts the car.
Here's a video of my car, showing how to start it with the emotion control key

Congrats on your decision to purchase!! Personally, I would not buy a car, especially an AM, with repainting it in mind. TOO many issues to contend with. You might want to have an inspection done to ease your mind. The book mentioned is an excellent resource as well. Are you going to go to Miami to see the car? Have you asked...and has the seller shared the maintenance records with you? Hope you find what your going to be please with. This time of year some people are looking at buying NEW due to the incentives offered on a few of the leftover new 2013 AM's. New = warranty. Good luck.

Interesting thread. I'm also looking to upgrade to a DB9 and the more I look, the confusioneder I get. Ordered the book, so that may help a bit.
I will say that if you don't care for ANYTHING about any car, walk it because you'll never be happy and always look to flip it, usually at a loss.

The mileage is nothing. These cars are not the fragile exotics that you think they are. Definitely do the PPI that Stuart suggests and unless something bad is discovered, buy it.
Now, if you just don't like the color (different strokes I guess), then just keep looking. If you don't find that beautiful and brilliant, don't even consider painting it. There are plenty of '09 and newer DB9 Volantes out there.

That's a beautiful car. I'd buy the S out of that one. Why are you even hesitating? That color combination is beautiful for a DB9 Volante.

What are you confused about? I've been reading and rereading Grant's book, and while I don't have or want a DB9 (yet), I and the rest of us can help.

Nice car, aggressively priced! Make sure the PPI includes a good look at the top. I was looking at a beautiful one and went down to write a check then noticed the top had some very ugly wear marks. Killed the deal for me - - -actually killed a rag top for me. Coupe only, now!
