Power Steering Pump not Working at Idle...

I understand if a PSP goes bad it wouldn't work at any RPM...but this behavior is strange to me...

At idle, the pump is not boosting the steering, but just off idle and throughout the RPM range it is working just fine...including the boost reduction as I gain speed.

The symptom appeared after I did a donut from a standing start to reverse direction from the shoulder...hit the rev limiter in first as I whipped her around and straightened her out and when I pulled over a minute later the power steering wasn't working at idle.

Is it possible that an air bubble is stuck in there or is the pump just at the beginning stages of failing? It's noisy when it is set to full lock when stopped and when trying to maneuver at low speeds.

Any steering pump experts out there?

The more important question...will I have to drop the chassis from the body to change the pump if bad? It's TIGHT in there! I certainly hope not!!!

I swear we had this same issue on a v8. Check for previous thread. But if I recall, the car needed a new pump.

Engine layout on the DB9 is the same as the DBS. Looks like you can just take off the drivers side MAF and get to it from the top. Should be a simple swap and doesn't look like it would take too long if you have the right tools.

After some deep searching I did find the thread thanks to AMFixer...thank you for the help though Don...Doughnuts should have jumped off the page, but it took me a while to see the obvious title.

I am discouraged by the outcome and not looking forward to the cost of my 5 seconds of fun...I had just lost my brand new Aston Martin 100th anniversary cap during a 125 mph speed run and was whipping a u-turn to retrieve it...expensive hat indeed...LOL.

Bolts 8 & 12 are not easy to access, but I'm going to consider DIY on this one...and change all the lines since my car has the original lines which cause judder at low speeds on occasion...there was some kind of service bulletin on this.

The drive belt is easily accessed from the bottom, but I'm going to talk to my new AM mechanic friend and see if he can offer a reality check on the DIY idea.

I never had this issue in my donut days of my youth in good ol' American muscle like my '91 ZR-1, my '68 Mustang or my Dad's '69 El Camino...I never knew power steering pumps were so sensitive...

Live, Laugh, Love...and Learn not to be a Hooligan in my late 50s...
