Loose part near gas cap . . .

Loose part near gas cap . . .
Hello all,
Noticed that there is a loose part floating around under the fuel door on my car (2011 V12V). I've attached a fairly poor photo (light was not good this morning). It clearly looks like it goes in the hole directly below the fuel filler cap but was hoping someone could tell me what that part is and if I should just put it back (and perhaps why it would have come loose in the first place).
As always thanks to everyone for their wisdom here . . .
best,
e

Thanks Telum. That makes sense though this part is just free floating around that compartment. It also fits perfectly into that hole. I'll try to get a better photo with proper light and update.

If it has fluted sides and 3 holes in the top, I believe that's the atmosphere vent for the carbon canister. It has to be above the level of the bottom of the fuel fill compartment so that no water gets in.

Actually..that drain hole is just for water..The carbon vent is off the DMTL pump which is in the LHR wheel well bolted to the cabin shell
That plastic thing has slots on the side and 3 holes on the top right? ..with the 3 holes facing up shove it in the water drain hole, won't go far, just sits in the bore'd out hole that fits the plastic part nicely....it's just a screen to prevent large pieces of dirt and leaves from entering the water drain tube and clogging..

Thank you very much for your good info. If I understand correctly (better pictures below), I should just put it back in like in the second picture? Should it be flush or should it stick out a bit?
Thanks again,
best,
