LSD cracked?!
LSD cracked?!
Second time it has left me stranded in 4 months of ownership.
For the first time I used the launch control (which, btw, slides the rear end all over the place--fun but not fast). Apparently the LSD didn't like it and cracked.
Still developing, my trusty mechanic sent me these pictures and thought I'd share.

Yes, so far:
$~7k in californa taxes.
$~4k (IIRC) in repairs (clutch, oil leak, maintenance).
$~??? in LSD repairs. Hopefully not 5 figures.
All in 4 months. Last of which I drove it maybe twice.
Apparently Aston doesn't sell the replacement part either. Might need to get it fabricated or custom ordered from Graziano.
At this point I'm considering getting rid of it. Who said this car was reliable?
~28k miles. Put 2k since I bought it.

It will hold N until RPMs are high enough, then drop the clutch and off you go.
Unfortunately this has two consequences:
- Since traction control is off, you WILL slide your rear end
- Your LSD might crack

Wow I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough time with your car...
I'm really not a fan of launch control - the shock to components is tremendous and the results are often disastrous (like you've experienced with a cracked LSD!). It's like hitting the LSD with a 380+ hp sledgehammer! (technically, hitting it with torque, but that doesn't sound as sexy.)
They're really only good for one thing: marketing. Actual use of launch control does far more harm than good.

The Vanquish is the only car in the current AM lineup that actually has this feature and has a dedicated button on the center console to enable it. The following is the Launch Control text from the Vanquish owner's manual (emphasis mine):
Launch Control
Launch control allows the vehicle to accelerate smoothly and as fast as possible from a standing start point. It helps to avoid wheel spinning, over-revving of the engine, and potential clutch and gearbox problems, therefore providing the most effective 'launch'.
To activate launch control:
1. The vehicle must be stationary with the engine running and in drive mode. The park brake must be off.
2. Firmly press the footbrake while at the same time pressing and holding the launch control button.
3. When launch control is successfully activated, the launch control button is illuminated and a red L is shown in the instrument cluster.
4. If not successful, then PRESS BRAKE PEDAL appears in the message centre. Press the brake pedal harder.
5. After releasing the brake pedal, there is a 2-3 seconds time period to accelerate before the launch control mode is cancelled. If unsuccessful, then repeat the previous steps again.
6. After successfully driving off using launch control, the system deactivates the launch control mode as soon as less pressure is detected on the accelerator, or second gear is reached or selected.

The Vantage can be very reliable if it is not abused. Sounds like your car may have had a rough life.

There's a thread on Pistonheads that details the procedure.
The car does rev up and drop the clutch, it does act differently.
This is the video of when it broke.
This is unacceptable of a car of this calibre and completely puts me off the brand entirely. I drag raced my M3 with no issues.

Yes, according to Irish07 (with appropriate warnings): https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...pin-tires.html
Again, this is not truly "launch control" in the true sense of the term. It is a way to do a burnout (and possibly damage your transaxle as you unfortunately discovered). Launch control is to get the best acceleration from standstill. There is no sense in turning off traction control and spinning the tires if this is your goal.
And Irish07 did warn about the risk of doing this in big, bold letters on his post a couple of years ago.

Shame on you for solo drag racing on a public street.
What kind of sports car is this, if it breaks just by launching it...
Drove an SLK (what I recall people here saying was a girly car) like crazy, way ahrder than the aston for 4 years. never a mechanical issue... a car that's worth twice MSRP can't do that?!
I am very very disappointed in this car
