Catch Can Draining
Catch Can Draining
Has anyone drained their catch can yet? The new inventory is ready to go and it'd be great to see what's been collected by people that have had them installed. Mine is always collecting oil but my results might be considered biased
so some impartial results would be great to see!
Bonus points if you know how many miles you've driven since collecting the oil you drain out

It's a kit I designed for my car that ended up being pretty popular, so I made some extra kits for other forum members. I handed the design over to Stuart to sell through VelocityAP (full disclosure, I am still involved in manufacture/supply). Here's the product listing on his website, note that it does not come with the drain valve pictured. Some people have added a drain valve, some haven't. Depends on how you want it set up and your own considerations.

There's some more information about it in this thread:

Thanks Christian! Kinda gross seeing that come out, isn't it?

@telum
Amazing but not shocking by the quantity, otherwise thinking that this oil gets burned and makes the cats probably unhappy makes me think something like why is the catch can not installed in these cars from the factory. The volume should easily last from service to service and therefore does not need intervention from the owner. ????
Nevertheless I am glad I got this great kit from the master of tinkering :-)
Thanks again

I doubt you'll ever see one on a car from the factory. There are two kinds of fluids in a vehicle - those that continue to cycle until refreshed (oil, coolant, etc), and those that are stored until consumed (fuel, windshield fluid). The catch can is capturing a fluid and storing it until drained by the owner/mechanic.
It's possible to recirculate the captured oil back into the system. However, I don't feel comfortable with that just yet because it creates a link between the crank case and the intake manifold - if the two are supposed to be at different pressure/vacuum levels at any given point, the differential won't be achieved because the catch can hoses (intake manifold to can, and can to crank case) are linking them.
You can put a check valve in between the can and the crank case, but liquid oil has to flow through that, and that adds a new layer of concern (valve function and longevity, among other things).
But for people like us that are aware of what goes into our cars, we can easily maintain an oil catch can. And, based on your measurement and mileage, the catch can only needs to be drained once or twice a year (~22k km or ~13k miles). The catch can holds 0.5 US Qts (a little less than 500 ml), so it has plenty of capacity.
Downside of course is that if not drained, the collected oil will overflow back into the PCV, blocking vented air from getting out of the crank case and into the intake manifold. That's why I wanted to make sure it could be removed for draining very quickly and easily. 30 minutes to remove, drain, and reinstall the catch can twice a year is pretty simple!

Went ahead and drained my catch can last night after a nice long while of stress testing (aka, "neglect" lol). It's hard to tell in the pic but there's a lot of oil there. I'll measure it when I get around to it.
