Another close call

With KF's and Telum's close calls with disaster, I thought I would post mine. I was on I80 from Sacramento to Reno when disaster struck. I ran over something that left a dime sized hole in the tread. These were brand new Potenzas RE-11 from Tire Rack. The 10" wide rim settled perfectly on the 285's when it went flat. By the time we stopped from 70mph the sidewall on the outside was completely worn away and the inner sidewall was paper thin. All the black stuff on the ground is what's left of the sidewall. Remarkably, there was no damage on the rim or fender. AAA towed the car to Sparks and Tire Rack delivered a new tire within the hour. Four hours after the blowout, the car was back on the road and my road trip vacation was saved.

Holy crap, glad you came out of that so well. That could have been a huge disaster. Glad you're okay and your trip wasn't ruined!

Glad you and the car are safe! Great pictures though! Turns out these cars look good on a tow truck or even with the tire falling off.

Hawaiian, is your car Meteorite? The color looks fantastic in the sunlight - lots of depth.

Instead of waiting for the tow truck, why didn't you give your flat repair goop/compressor a try?

Lucky for you Tire Rack has their western distribution center in Reno. I had this happen once on my Porche Turbo in no where eastern Oregon and it took three days to get the tire. Glad all turned out well.

The first indication that something was wrong was the huge clouds of smoke coming from the rear. No shimmy or shakes. Everyone behind us backed off real quick so we could pull to the side.

It took five guys and the supervisor at the tire shop to figure out how to jack up the car since the car was so low. I had to advise them to get blocks of wood so I could drive onto them and then locate the small jacking points. Even the supervisor from AAA had to stop by to make sure the car wasn't damaged in towing.

Check out page 25 on the picture thread for more pics and info on the car.
