I just did the sat nav gear repair with the kit on my '07 V8V. Kind of considered just leaving the nav out since I also don't really want to use it anyway. Would drop 2.75 pounds of weight too, lol.

Why not leave it out, fab a mounting for two gauges that fits in the opening and install an oil pressure and voltmeter.
Would a 6.8" (172 mm) wide Garmin unit fit in the tray?
Or 170 mm is the maximum?
I'm fairly sure it will fit the tray: The Nuvi 2689LMT I have fitted has the dimensions 6.6"W x 3.7"H x 0.76"D (16.8 x 9.4 x 1.9 cm). The DriveSmart 76 is only 5mm bigger along the edges (6.8”W x 3.9”H x 0.7”D (17.3 x 9.9 x 1.9 cm) however you may not have a lot of room left to fit a nice custom bezel avoiding an aftermarket look.

Sdekoning love what you did. Do you have any instructions on how you did it. Replacing the screen with a Garmin unit is something I thought of the first 2 days I owned my vantage. Now figuring out the wiring is a whole different story.

Please check this thread https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post4544600 (and some more scrolling) which shows some more detail on how I did it. Wiring is fairly easy since you only need a switched-power to your Garmin unit: since you are only taking out the OEM screen the system still thinks its present, thus opening the lid on startup and closing it on switch-off.
System still works as it should today: I have also updated the system twice since the install and this thread is a reminder to myself to install the latest 2024.10 maps :-)

Can't believe its been nearly 8 years since I installed this system and it still works well to this day. I did recently have to "upgrade/fix" my ski-slope since it started to de-laminate. Also, one of the plastic hinges of the NAV cover started to break with epoxy glue not really fixing it. I first thought of sending the slope and NAV cover to ECPS in Poland to have it redone in CF but then thought it would be over the top and decided to paint it in a satin slightly lighter grey myself after lots of 1000 grit wet sanding; the result is great imho.
Maps are updated to 2024.10 and it shows all I need. Bluetooth streaming is thru my Dension Gateway icw Bovee 1000 so Audio quality is very good as well.
Any possibility we could track down a solid standalone wireless Carplay/Android Auto unit that supports bluetooth audio out for a modern version of this? I've been looking, but most of the units are 7" and seem to be too wide. I've been mostly looking on Amazon and AliExpress. If we could collaborate, I bet a LOT of members would prefer this route and it would be vastly simpler/cheaper than most of the dedicated CarPlay/Android Auto boxes that still rely on the old, crappy screen. Most of the units I've found also support front/rear cameras.

If we can find a unit that will fit, I'd be happy to send one to @sdekoning to get this rolling. Group interest?

I would be interested in a solution other that the expensive and intrusive Aston Installations unit..
The biggest issue is size. Most of the aftermarket CarPlay screens are just too big. Maybe a solution might be to remove the rotating screen completely and install something permanently in the opening? There was a poster who installed a Garmin instead of the original screen. Not sure how that worked out.

Didn't realize this had a rotating screen. If we remove the screen rotation, would that give us any extra space? Obviously no benefit to turning these devices to portrait mode.
The current NUVI2689LMT unit is sized 6.6"W x 3.7"H x 0.76"D (16.8 x 9.4 x 1.9 cm). Within these dimensions you are able to fabricate an almost OEM solution. Ofcourse, there is a slighty larger space available in width and Height (think up to 3mill, thickness not really) but anything larger means you cant manufacture a 'çlosing bezel' around it which will then always means it'll show its "afterthought" feel to it (my opinion)
I still have the contra-mold for the original bezel-surround that I made so a slight modification to the 'new' screen and reproduction will be no issue:
By the way I kept my original "Aston" 'flip-open' unit completely and bought a used Volvo unit which I used for the conversion back in 2016. It means all will also be fully reversible in future if needed at all.
The only thing I can't see directly on the previous 2 links would be an Aux-in in form of a 3.5mm Jack required for the physical microphone allowing calls over bluetooth as well. Other then that running the sound through a A2DP or Bleutooth would surely work perfect, as well as camera options and all the rest.
I could surely work on producing these units on a core-exhange base which I think will be the best option: you will get a full working set including bezel and all (sprayed in a colour of your choice if requested. All you need is switched 12V wire and upgrade your audio with a Mr12Volt or Dension (if you currently do not have Bluetooth)
