Plasti dip rims?

Has anyone gone the extra cheap route of plasti dipping your rims? I am thinking of making mine gloss black?

Any thoughts experiences? I also am thinking of doing the grill as well.

The grille will chip and peel because of where it's located.

I've seen wheels come out nicely, but not sure how long it lasts.

Not sure of the cost, but powder coating is a much better option

Powder coating is far better, but Plastidip is very cheap and generally reversible (be careful where you get it lol)

Exactly! I don't want it to be perm so I think this would be best for me.

I dipped the grille of my Wrangler four months ago, it seems to be holding up fine, with probably more abuse than your grille will encounter.

I dipped my track-car wheels and they are still perfect after 6 track weekends and 1000+ track miles.

Plasti-dip + Glossifier suck. You won't get a nice smooth finish. At least not from a can.

I dipped my wife's LR4 winter wheels 2 years ago and they are holding up fine. I dipped my 996 winter wheels and used glossifier this year. Not thrilled with that result. Not sure either finish would look right on an Aston.

Currently 'dipping' some under bonnet parts to see how they look before committing to powder coating. Like being able to peel it off.

The only thing is that I don't think that the "gloss" finish looks good at all. The matte black looks smooth and uniform, all the attempts I've seen at gloss look bad.

I will do matte black first and if I don't like it I will do another layer and do the gloss and if I don't like that I will rip it all off!

Thanks for the input!

This is ArtB car on the bottom and mine on the top. I'm certainly thinking about this look long and hard! But with plasti dip I don't have to commit to anything.

I say go for it! It only takes some time and about $45 of plastidip and if you don't like it, peel it off.

Don't forget you also need to do the back side of the wheels, and the inside of the wheel barrels. Otherwise it will look funny. I used 7 spray cans of dip to do 4 wheels. Be sure to make the coating thick enough, otherwise it is harder to remove. When you spray it on, as long as you don't have any runs the coating will dry smooth. If you get a run, wipe it off right away with some paper towel and re-spray the surface. I was amazed at how crappy it can look while it's wet and still dry very smooth.

I used 3x5 index cards slipped in between the tire and the rim to mask off the tire from the wheel. That worked perfectly, and much easier than trying to use masking tape.
