993 to Vantage?
993 to Vantage?
Hello Everybody,
This is my first post on the forum. I have been contemplating on trading my 1997 Porsche 993 in for an early Vantage. Does anyone have experience with both. The 993 feels small and light, and is easy to drive hard without fear of going to jail. I would not want to trade to a car that is slower than what I already have though. My car has been very good for the last 10 years, but I feel like it may be time to try something new. I have been looking at cars for sale and am trying to get an idea of what the MUST options are as well as what I should be looking at purchase price wise. Also, should I be looking at a higher mileage (30k miles) to see that all the bugs have been worked out? I look forward to the responses.

I would suggest you hang onto that 993 until the novelty of the Vantage dims thru ownership a bit. I held onto my 993 after adding a DB9 and am glad I did. They are simply different driving experiences. I still have both and intend to hang onto them.
I've owned both. Actually two 993s and a Vantage GT, simultaneously.
To me, the 993 is a true sports car. The Vantage is a GT car. Drive a couple of Vantage's and you'll have a better comparison of the two. If looking for more comfort, room,a change, including meeting new enthasiusts from AMOC, you'll enjoy the Aston.

I'd keep both. The Vantage is much larger, more nicely finished, less nimble car better suited to high speed and longer drives. Totally different driving experience. Different tool for a different job.
I also own a 993 and a vantage.
Lately I'm thinking about selling the 993, since i hardly drive it anymore. On the other hand, they keep going up in value every 6 months or so...
Better keep it for another year or so

I also own a 1996 993 and a 2009 Vantage.
From driving, the Aston is a way better car in all measurements.
The 993 is an investment since the prices are just going up.

Come on guys who has not seen a man in a Porsche at the lights and quietly thought what a dick ? Even worse when we see a bird in a Porsche at the lights ..... we know what her man is compensating for.
Sorry just my opinion

I'm to scared to lurk into the Porsche threads to see how they must speak about us poor sods
Thanks for the replies so far. The Porsche has been a great car with many friendly waves on the road... and at stop lights.
Do you guys feel that acceleration would be close to equal in both cars? The Porsche was quick off the line, but it gets very fast as the revs and speed builds. I've been looking at cars with the 4.3l motor. Also what options are "must haves"?

A bigger engine, specifically the V12. Unless you don't mind getting dusted by Audi SUV's as I just did. [????] I didn't launch hard but we both nailed the light even, but by the time I got to 5000 it was over and I just backed off [wasn't the best location for a drag race]. And I've got the 4.7.
I have owned four 993's over the years and purchased my first Aston/V8V two years ago.
The appeal of the 993 is that it is the last of he air cooled 911's and in my opinion, is the best looking 911 since the early cars (1964-1973).
I debatd whether to purchase a very low mileage Porsche or a new Vantage. I chose a new Volcano red Vantage with a manual. It is a completely different car than the Porsche.
Much more refined and elegant. Better investment...clearly not.

Options:
-Manual
-Premium stereo
-i know you are looking for the 4.3L car, go for the 2009+ car if you can. Many upgrades, not just the engine
-if 4.3L, try and find one with the Sportpack
-ask if the timing chain cover gasket has been fixed. By now, I am guessing that a lot of the early cars that experienced this should be fixed.
-Don't be afraid of the "higher" mileage cars. According to my service manager, they have more problems with the cars that sit than the ones that get driven.
There are many easy (bolt on) upgrades to make the 4.3L a little meaner.
