I know that SMG to Manual evolved to an common mod in the e46 M3 world over the last few years since the SMG prices well below and more availability in the market.
For the e46, there is a (spring) modification on the bell housing required/ manual bell housing, pedal, linkage and coding.

I'm very excited about the outcome.

after the conversion if this car is sold any owner that runs the vin will see modified...no dealer would touch this car.

Like many that modify non factory it is ok if keeping the car but when resale time lucky to unload to a non AM person if lucky...just some thoughts...

Good luck...but I am missing how this is cost effective now or when the car has issues who will fix...as there will always be the saying of problem created when converted...just buy a stick car...I think if you want a stick...tons of AM stick cars on the market...

That's actually the easiest part, just flash the same year manual trans spec file to the Engine PCM and possibly the CEM to avoid the gear disabled msg in the cluster. Would also need to remove the paddles, change out the pedal to assembly. Course access to a AMDS would be required for the CEM but again..it's one of the easiest parts for a tech with "connections".

The hard parts would be the internal trans couplers are thinner on the ASM trans, possibly the forks as well to bring make up the coupler thickness differences. It actually might be easier and cheaper to find a complete manual transmission or make friends with a guy at Graziano

I'm interested to see how this project goes.

When I went to the Daytona 24 I was looking at the two V8 Vantages that run in the Weathertech series. One of them was a Sportshift and the other a manual. I was surprised to see a manual and was mentioning that to may dad when one of the drivers walked up. Talked to him for a bit and he said the Sportshift car started out as a manual and they converted it and they were going to do the same thing to the other car. Said Aston sold a kit for something like $30k. If you could find out what's in that kit then you might be able to reverse it to go from Sportshift to manual. If the internals of the gearboxes are different then I wonder how you get around that without either opening up the gearbox or switching it. You also might be able to contact the team and see if they have the manual parts they took off.

That 30k kit for an old Vanquish had a T56 transmission, which had a completely different system, trans was also in the front and obviously did not house the axle. Nothing from it will transfer over into this graziano transaxle unit used in the Vantage.

Not sure where the Vanquish comes in. The cars that were converted from manual to Sportshift were V8 Vantages. I forget the exact years, but think he said one was a 2011 and the other a 2012. He said they got a kit from Aston to do it. Maybe AMR put together a kit for them, dunno. I'm guessing if you were able to talk to one of the mechanics they could give you the details.

I could see this being worth it for a V12S with the new high HP engine where it was ONLY available with auto. For a V8 I would just buy another V8 with three pedals.

Never underestimate the sentimental value of a car and its owner
Was watching a tv show where an owner bought in a 1970 Corvette to be restored. The shop owner tried to talk him out of it, saying that it would cost in excess of a 100K (US) to restore the car and it would still only be worth 20K.
The Corvette owner replies, it was my first car, I don't car how much it costs.

They were referring to the previous gen Vanquish (MY06 and earlier). That car was only offered with an auto and Aston Martin offered a program to do a manual conversion after the fact. The point is that there's precedence for an auto-to-manual conversion on Astons, and even AM themselves have done it.
