Pirelli Tyres (Tires)

Watching the last couple of Grand Prix I notice that Pirelli are advertising the P-Zero with colour lettering on the side wall.
Checking their website the colours are available in red , yellow, white and silver.
I fancy the red as my Vantage has black wheels and red calipers.
I need a new set by year end.
However -how good is the tyre on a Vantage?
Anyone use Pirelli?

P-Zero's are standard issue on the V12V.

Depending on which size combination your car uses the P Zero line may or may not be available. That being said the Michelin line of tires, especially the new Pilot P 4S, which are available are generally far superior to the P Zero series. I personally feel that a tire's performance is far more important to most of us than the color of the writing on the sidewall. To each his own.

Thank you Yorick,
I would not choose a tyre simply on sidewall colour.
I wish to establish personal experience,
Have you experience of the Pirelli or if not please advise me on which survey proves the Michelin to be
"far superior to the P-Zero"

Personally I put a lot of credence in the results of the surveys on Tirerack's website. I lost faith in Pirelli years ago when they had a period of time where they had lots of problems with delamination.

For their performance survey results see:

Sorry, didn't mean to sound snippy in my other post. It was 8:20AM here and I hadn't had enough caffeine in my system by that time. I'm OK now.

Google searches with Tire Rack being the most popular will show you independent testing for the M PS4 tires and Pirelli P Zeros. However, the Michelin PS4 or the old PSS are by far the most recommended tire for any high performance car. I find the Continental (NEW) Extremecontact Sport is the best. They outrank the Michelin PS4's in wet handling and quietness. They fall short slightly due to "turn-in" is not quite as responsive as the PS4 tire.

All in all, it seems to me the Pirelli's get placed on new cars for whatever the deal the manufacturer has with the tire maker, then for the second set of tires, owners never go with them and switch to the Michelins.

I agree, I have seen the PZERO in small red letters built in the or on the tire. Thought it was fairly cool looking. But on any car other than a red Ferrari, I think it would look terrible. But you will be much better served with going with the PS4 or the Conti tires.

I find tirerack,s rating system somewhat suspect. It really depends on where you are and how you drive. I would not summarily dismiss Pirelli tires as somehow sub-standard to the Michelins. It really depends on driving styles and personal preferences. I say investigate further, drive a car with the Pirelli tires if possible.
Finally, any sidewall lettering in colors other than white or yellow is suspect (smile)

Usually a good data source. I have the 4S on now and so far feels great. 4S is a brand new replacement for the PSS ... If it 'really' has 30k mile warranty... that would be double what I got out of my Pilot Super Sports. They say added grip and increased wear are the two big improvements.

IIRC Michelin says the warranty for staggered setups is half of the usual since you can't rotate the tires.

I'm picking up a set of PSS or 4S tomorrow. Excited for these tires!

Get the 4S unless they are really discounting the PSS (older tire). You will enjoy.

Time will tell on the milage... "supposedly" there have been some genuine advancements in tire compounds lately...

oh i'm sure there have been advancements, especially with the performance in all of the reviews. i'm referencing only the stated warranty from michelin rather than actual tread wear one may experience.

that said, i ended up getting a set of the 4S! came out to $990 for all 4 including mounting, balancing, etc.

Thats a really great price. Cheapest I had seen them a few months back was $300 to $330 ea. At 990 installed, I might have gone with those over the Conti Extremecontact Sport which were about $270 a tire for me. Regardless, you got a great tire.

I checked out the new colored Pirellis after seeing your post. They can be pre-ordered directly from Pirelli. A set for my Vanq was $3k for one of the 4 standard colors. For a custom color, it was $4k. You can choose from among hundreds of Pantone colors, so you can probably get an exact match to your car, the wheels or the calipers. Tempting....

That actually happened to one of my previous cars running factory spec'd Pirellis. Never was a fan of the tires anyways. I have been running MPSS's on all of my cars for years now and have never looked back.

Following the consensus I ordered a set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S.
When the shop fitted the new tyres they chipped the powder coating on the rim edge (I have black rims).Fortunately I took the wheels off the car (Quickjack in my garage) and did not take the car in. So I left the wheels and told them I would collect and pay when the wheels were again perfect. They have gone off to be powder coated in satin black as original. No profit for the shop on this deal!
