2009 DB9 oil level

I would first like to say that I appreciate all of the info that the participants provide on this forum. Last month my instrumentation went bad, and after checking any potentially relevant fuses, I researched this forum and it correctly identified that the roof control module was bad. Replacement fixed the instrumentation (still need the dealer to program it for the roof to operate). Previously the forum also identified how to reset my SRS warning light (and the appropriate tool).

I realize there are multiple threads on oil dipsticks and proper levels, but my situation seems potentially different. I just did my first oil change (again the forum helped make this a straightforward task). After adding the specified 11.5 quarts, the dipstick only registers barely at the “min” line.
12.5 quarts were drained out during the change (that had registered close to the “max” line).
So my question is should I leave it barely at “ min” or add the additional quart that was previously in the engine?

Add the quart - it should be near but not exceed the full

I like mine near the max with a cold engine... You might want to add 1/2 quart at a time so you don't overfill.

I appreciate the responses. I ended up adding a tiny bit more than 1/2 quart. This got it to the “max” line. Considering how large the capacity is, I was surprised that the min and max levels are so very close to each other.

Just out of curiosity, what would happen if the oil was over filled? I fill mine closer to the Max like 07. Dialing in the volume of oil during my annual routine takes about 45 minutes to an hour to avoid overfilling.

I went thru the same thing when I got my DB9 last year, I presume you have the updated Dip Stick as it's an 09' so it's 13 quarts from bone dry, however that's nearly impossible so after an oil change I found 12.4-12.6 to be right at Max which can be deceptive with the dipstick as the readings will fluctuate a bit based on which way the OIL lettering is facing, I try to keep it facing me on the drivers side for consistency. Also the notch is a bit too thick so it can give a false over filled, I simply shaved it down a bit with a dremel and now it reads accurately. Also I typically start at 12 quarts and run the engine for 10 mins and let it sit for 30 minutes than I check and fill accordingly.

If you overfill you will create some crankcase foaming and it will wind up in the factory air/oil separators which will than pull it by way of vacuum into the air inlets/throttle bodies/intake manifolds, you can check either side quickly by loosening the factory pain in the *** clamp at the throttle body (I replaced these with standard worm clamps to make this easier) to check for oil pooling.

I created a setup to prevent this, see my Air/Oil Separator post on the main Aston Thread. Cheers!

Hello,

I also have a 2009 DB9 Volante. What kind of instrument issues did you have? I’m having an issue where my instrument cluster flickers randomly from the brightest to almost the dimmest setting. Also my fuel gauge is stuck on full. Car doesn’t seem to be throwing any codes. Thanks

My instrumentation issue was a “well known” failure. All of the gauges go dead, and a bunch of safety issues/warnings are displayed. It doesn’t throw a ‘flag” but It sounds different from what you are experiencing.

Those with a 2009 DB9, when you get a chance can you let me know what part number your dipstick is? I've read conflicting reports of different dipsticks for a 2009 so am curious. Thanks!
