2009 Vantage Coupe - Second Key

My best buddy is a dealer and sold an 09 Vantage coupe and was told there were two keys with the car. The original owner came back and said he cannot find the extra key. Question for the forum. Is there a way to get a second key made without spending top dollar at the dealer? I think they quoted $1300 USD for the key.. Thank You

I wonder if we could just 3D print a case that fits into the dock and use the electronics from the volvo key.

I'm planning to do something similar, but with mahogany or purple heart wood and a CNC machine. It'll cost a lot less than a crystal key, and, I'm hoping, look as good or better.

The biggest problem with swapping keys is the little transponder tag. If you don't have one of the original plastic keys to swap it out from, you'll need to get one from Aston and have it programmed to your VIN, which I hear is stupidly expensive.

The 09 and newer cars should have come with 3 keys; one crystal key ($1800) and two crappy plastic keys. The plastic keys are very cheap for parts, the major cost is having Aston Martin program the transponder to the car's VIN, which no one else can do. No way around that.

Transponder chip can be programmed by anyone as long as you already have 2 ECU keys programmed. It's a DIY thing in the comfort of your own garage. It's the remote transmitter part that needs coded to the vehicle.

hey J DoubleU, sorry to bring up this old thread but you mentioned something about programming the car to accept a new ignition key. Can you elaborate on the process?

So i have an 2007 V8 Vantage, the metal key that looks like this ( https://astonmartinbits.com/models/5...age/parts/1212 ), Unfortunately, 1 of the 2 keys were stolen (among other things out of my daily driver). I'm looking to buy a blank key and program it. I dont need the fob and i dread the dealership.

Can anyone share the programing procedure?

thanks so much!

Unfortunately it requires 2 already programmed keys to add additional ones. Definitely recommend a new key and a dealer visit to clear program of the lost key. By adding the new key it will disable previously programmed keys.

Did you ever end up trying this?

Both my keys work, but neither are in great cosmetic condition. Something in mahogany to match the ski slope in my car would look great.

thanks for the response. Can you maybe clarify? From my other readings, the car has two keys associated with its computer but can accept more duplicate keys by syncing the transponder.

however, if the cars computer only has one key synced to it, then it must need a dealer visit. The car doesn’t know that my 2nd key was lost. As far as the computer knows, I’m just trying to add a 3rd key. Basically, the car already has 2 keys programmed.

is there’s a programming response anyone can share?

thanks again for tour help

I'm in work on it, it's weekend a side project. I've got the 3D model done, bought a small CNC machine and most of the materials. I'm currently iterating prototypes with cheaper, soft woods to get the process down and make sure feed rates and chip loads are not going to be too stressful for the small size milling bits I'm using.

The plan is to make some out of wood and some out of anodized aluminum. I'm also working on customizations to match the key body to the car.

Patience is key (pun intended). I'm going for something very ambitious and high quality.

Here's a sneak preview of a recent iteration:

Awesome. Please keep us informed of your progress. I think you could have a market for them here on this forum. Keep up the good work.

my understanding is that the PROCEDURE to duplicate a key requires two functioning keys. i.e. one functioning key is inserted (then something must be done), then, after the first key is removed, a second functioning key is inserted (and something again must be done) then, after the second key is removed, a 3rd key, the one that needs to be programmed, is inserted and (again after something is done) is programmed by the computer. ergo, no dealer is involved. i assume this can be repeated ad infinitum.

...but if you don't have a second functioning key, you've got to go to "the man".
