AMR Dual Disc Clutch and Flywheel Issues

Just wanted to post this up for anyone contemplating the dual disc set ups. I bought the AMR kit and have had some interesting discoveries.

Install was straight forward. It uses the Audi R8 clutch pack, custom throw out bearing plus a lightened flywheel. Includes all bolts needed as well. You will need to order a pilot bearing.
Initial impression after install is the same as others, engine is far more snappy and happy to rev. Clutch is almost too light for me. I like more feedback. I am sure it is something you get used to. Sadly I have not been able to put enough miles on it to have a final verdict, TOB failed quickly before 200 mile break in period was done.

Scuderia got with AMR and they are replacing the kit under warranty even though I had an Indy install. I am out a little labor, as they would not cover that, as I anticipated. First, bravo to the great service! Second, I found it odd to replace the entire kit and not just send a new throw out bearing. This is what I learned when I asked. The TOB, flywheel and clutch pack do not have individual inventory numbers and can not be ordered except as a total kit. Granted you may be able to source the clutch pack from Audi? I am glad I decided not to install myself due to lack of time. I had to send sell my Indy as qualified being a 19 year Porsche Master Tech, who also worked on Lambos and Astons. Scuderia went to bat with AM and got approval. They are great to deal with.

Food for thought, if the VAP kit allows ordering of individual parts it may be a better choice for those that plan on keeping their Vantages long term and put some miles on yearly. For a weekend warrior this may not be an issue as a new clutch could last your entire ownership and then some.

Compared to the V8 TOB, they kit unit is about 1/8" taller, all of it being in the bearing cap. The cap is also more rounded with less contact area between the edge and fingers than on the V8. It;s also different from the V12 version. Guessing the simply added a new cap to the V8 TOB to take up slack needed for actuation and also fit the R8 finger pattern. Pic below showing my old V8 TOB (Slightly rusted on top) and new TOB.

I've been running the VAP dual-disc clutch kit for almost 5 years now, absolutely trouble-free.

Thanks for posting your experience. What did your Indy charge to install the twin plate clutch?

I also have the Velocity AP twin disc clutch in mine, and it's been perfect for almost a year now (2600 miles or so). If I remember correctly my shop charged about $2k to do the swap and a full fluid flush.

11 hours of labor. His rate is $110/hr. Was just under $1500 with tax.

Thanks guys for posting the install costs.

So with the VAP Twin Plate Clutch at $4K plus $1500 - $2000 to install totals ~ $6K.

During the PPI on my 2011 Vantage the clutch Bite Check indicated that it still had a lot of life left in it.

I remember reading that on earlier Vantages the Twin Plate Clutch was a rather easy install and did not require any alterations to the torque tube. Does anyone know what model year the design changed?

I have a feeling the 2011 Vantage requires the torque tube alteration and the labor cost will reflect this.

Has anyone had their later model Vantage fitted with the Twin Plate Clutch and remember the cost?

Thanks in advance.

2015 the torque tube changed. You should be good to go.

Well thought that the torque tube changed went the exhaust change but not 100% on that one, if it is so it would have been 2010.5 that the Vantage changed their exhaust to have 4 x Cats (2 on each side) one is in the header and seem to be about 200 cell and the other is under the car 400 cell. The older than 2010.5 had 2 x cats one on each side 600 cell

Looks like it changed for the 2014 motor year according to AM.
AMR kit numbers:

Pre 2014MY 6G33-11-10821
MY2014 post 6G33-11-10797

VAP lists it as MY2015 when the torque tube changed on their website.
So unless you have a MY2014, you should be good to go. If MY2014 double check before ordering.

The only part of this that I care about is possibly the flywheel. You should always replace the throwout bearing with the clutch anyway. Depending on the life and design of the clutch, the flywheel may not need to be replaced when the clutch is, but in my experience, it's about a 50/50 chance. However, for comparison the flywheel only appears to be about $100 of the cost of the VAP system so it may not be a big deal either way. Note that the price on the single plate flywheel is almost $900 so the actual price of the AMR flywheel if sold individually is probably more like this higher price, obviously.

Agreed. My issue would have been if AM did not replace the kit under warranty and I had to replace a faulty TOB on a brand new kit. I would have been out another $3500 instead of $500ish.

For end of life replacement you are correct, it generally all gets replaced.

I was eyeing the AMR kit since I feel like the V12 clutch is kind of overkill, is this an isolated incident? Is there any reason to believe it's a design problem that leads to more failures? With all the labor it would take to replace, this is scary to hear.

I have heard of no other failures, I did a lot of research. However over all very few installed and many drivers put few miles on their cars. I think I may be an isolated case with a bad initial TOB.

In the process of having the clutch from VAP installed. Dropped the car off last Thursday.

indy quoted me 2k CAD dealer 3k CAD. Decided to go with the dealer for piece of mind. Both quoted 15 hours. I have a MY12 Vantage S.
