Vantage Fuel Lid Cover Adhesive?

Hi!

In my attempt at fixing/aligning my fuel door so it would open properly I broke the hinged bracket that is made out of cast aluminum I think.

The metal and painted fuel lid body panel is adhered with a rather high build black adhesive between the body colored cover and the bracket.

I was able to remove the painted panel from the old bracket with heat, my question is what is the oem adhesive or what would a suitable replacement adhesive be for bonding the fuel lid back to the hinge bracket? I don't want it to go flying off one day while driving.

It needs to be high build as it looks like they build up a bead to help body panel alignment.

There is a product that bonds automotive panels together. (Panel bonding adhesive) You can get it on Amazon. It’s a two part epoxy. Should work for your project.
Good luck.

I agree it's an epoxy .... The color looks like JB Weld which they might buy in bulk. Be sure to roughen both surfaces slightly and then clean with alcohol prior to adhesive.

It's a softish compound that only starts to let go under very high heat.

I would not remove the original adhesive but spread a layer of JB Weld on top of it to bond them together.

Mildly interesting. There were some differences between the new part and the old part. The old one I believe is cast aluminum, the new bracket is stamped steel and has a slightly different spring mechanism. I managed to get it back on with 3m panel bonding adhesive. Not the best solution for this problem as it wasn't quite high build enough so it made it slightly tricky but I am confident the cover isn't coming off lol

If you used "panel bond" like you get at home depot that would likely not survive high heat and temp changes...

Good c luck

The new part certainly has an improved spring to open it.
