Just Bought An A3 S-line Daily Driver

Usually hang out in the 996TT section, but I just bought an '07 A3 S-line with DSG for the winter beater. 7 months old with 7K miles and Audi certified til 100K miles. It is at Champion in Fl, which strangely enough is where my Porsche was originally sold as well. The paperwork was recieved by Champion this morning by FedEx and it will be on an enclosed carrier this afternoon or tomorrow AM at the latest. It should be here Monday. Here are a few pics from the dealer....

Only with 3.2. I believe this one is 2.0T? Or else someone swap them out

a little worse than the GTI 20-35 depending on how heavy your foot is.

question: as your winter beater, are you grabbing a set of snow shoes for that thing? also what made you avoid the quattro 3.2? especially with the Michigan winters.

Craigger, this purchase was more an impulse buy than anything. I am in the middle of a yearlong 8500 rpm engine build with my 996TT and just wanted something fun. I was real close to purchasing a MazdaSpeed3, but saw this in FL. I just like the way the German companies engineer vehicles. Since this was roughly the same price as the MS3, and the build quality and materials are top notch I did the deal in a day. Since I work for the nation's largest enclosed auto transporter, buying out of state didnt add anything to the price. I just had to call in a few favors. The car was picked up Sat and will be in MI tomorrow. As for front wheel drive versus Quattro, it was strictly a matter of price. My last DD I had for 9 years and put 31K miles on it and so I really dont want a 2nd car that is too expensive that sits around. I am just going to flash it and have fun.

Nice car, let the temptation begin...

VW's latest generation 4 cylinder turbo engine, the 2.0T, has an inherently awesome VE (volumetric efficiency) curve. In fact, it is so great that it is just cause for all new, from the ground up testing in search for the proper matching turbo.

Once we peeled away the improperly sized (by design by VW) factory spec K03 from the engine, did we then began to see the true potential of the new engine. The increased displacement of the 2.0L engine (from 1.8L on 1.8T) and the greatly improved flow potential of the new cylinder head design resets the playing field for the power making game. After much testing with 2.0T engine in the last couple of years, we can honestly say that "it's no 1.8T". The power and response of this new platform requires a whole new turbo strategy.

Why such a "large" turbo as a GT3071R? An efficient turbo to match an efficient engine! It's a great match! You could go smaller as usual but you'll choke up the engine in the higher revs!

After countless test sessions, all the data shows the GT3071R allows the 2.0T operate very close to its natural efficiency curve (to develop HP as the revs continue to climb to redline). Not only that, but it's able to do it without sacrificing low end drivability. This allows us to run the full scale 60mm turbine wheel on the GT3071R coupled with the highly efficient GT/T3 VB exhaust housing (which ensures proper engine breathing at the mid to high RPM range to make excellent HP) to gain peak efficiency AND STILL have the ideal low end power bandband for everyday street use. That's right, with this new engine, you can have your cake and eat it too! Big power and no lag. You will NOT have to resort to the smaller turbine wheels with smaller exhaust housings just to get the turbo to spool up quicker, but at the expense of higher backpressure numbers and higher EGT temps which subsequently kills peak power to the point where you will have to turn your boost levels much higher than necessary to make good power. By using an efficient and well matched unit like the GT3071R to do the job, you can make the desired power more safely, reliably, and best of all, effortless (with less boost).

Note: You are recommended to source a fueling/tuning solution to compliment this turbo kit. We found that the stock fuel system maxes out at crank 350HP on 91 octane, which translates to about 15-16 psi max on this turbo kit. This means you can take a typical 1 bar chip that runs a bit on the rich side on the stock turbo and make very good power with just the bolt-on hardware. Just make sure the program doesn't hit boost cut when you hit 15-16 psi peak boost. You can run directly off the wastegate pressure and have a ball with this amount of power until a bigger injector fueling solution becomes available. Always watch your air/fuel mixture to make sure you don't go lean when turning up the boost with any boost control device.
Too much? Just the basics...

I know temptation very well. I am so far into my 996TT engine build it is insane. One wild engine build at a time. A flash and go for this A3 is about all I am interested in at the moment. Just out of curiosity, how much TQ can these DSG trans handle before they go boom? Kevin
