E Gear or 6 Speed??

Thinking of getting a R8 V10 but I can't figure out which gearbox is the one.

McNish seems to tout the E Gear box but is he chanting the corporate line?

Your opinions will be welcome....

I think its a personal preference. i have no experience with the audi boxes but i know when it comes to porsche i would consider the pdk after driving one and i can assume the audi unit would be close. If you like having the 3 pedals get the 6speed if not get the rtronic.

Actually you can answer the question by yourself. While I'm sure they won't let you take an R8 out for a test (heck i could totally be wrong though), I do know you can take an M6 out for a test drive. Find one with the SMG and you will feel what a single clutch Paddle Shift feels like. Personally, I hate it and have disliked it ever since I got the M6. A big problem for me is the timing. There's a noticeable delay when you hit the paddle to when it goes into gear. Kind of a "one one thousand, tw" (you don't get two out of your mouth but you get the idea). Also on the R8 it's a heavy clunk, kind of like someone dropped a bowling ball in the back of the car. Dual clutches are much more smooth but isn't offered. That's not to say all paddles are like that. I had a Ferrari California for a few weeks and that shifter was unbelievable. You hit the paddle and it went "CRACK" like a stick breaking and it was in gear before you even gave a thought to taking your fingers off the paddle. Instant response. On a track it's going to be faster to have paddles and I will say that the M6's SMG as well as the Gallardo's EGear blip of the throttle is spot on and a beautiful thing. It's not perfect though and clearly the current switch to dual clutches shows that the technology behind it is going the way of the dodo. Also, I live in San Francisco and we have extreme hills. The EGear will actually shift to second going up a really steep hill then decide "uh no" and go back to first. Obviously this causes a lot of whipsaw and terrible driving. This makes me go to manual mode to go up the hill. (yes I know I should be there anyways but sometimes going to the office you get lazy and throw it into Auto). In the end it's personal choice as well as where you drive (track for example). Take it for a spin and find out.

it is totally personal preference, to me if this is going to be a everyday car, then e gear, but if it is your sports car, and something just to play with then you may want to go with a stick.....

Drove both at Infineon - E gear best on track ,6-spd to drive everyday due to more driver involvement.I recommend that you sign up for the 1 day Audi sportscar Experience - pricy but you can save 10% by joining the Audi Club.Cheaper than making wrong decision!!
