Pretty much wiped em up.
Personally, love the car.

The S4 is a nicer car than the 335i, but the M3 will crush it in terms of driving dynamics. The interior of the S4 (I have both an M3 and A4 Avant S Line) is much nicer than the M3 and the electronics are in another league. The M3 is a 4 door race car. There is nothing like an 8300 RPM redline and handling is incredible. As a do everything car the S4 is probably a little nicer, but once you are on the track or in the canyons in the M3 everything else becomes irrelevant.

I would say the new 335is is the closest thing to it... price point/power/layout and overall target audience.
Beemer's have dominated the automotive mag's comparisons on sport sedans for quite some time. The 2010 S4 has changed that. And while Audi implies the S4 is situated between the 335xi and the M3, it really competes with the 335xi. I was close to another Beemer purchase untill taking a good look at the S4. Personal preference, but the Audi's styling, interior, and supercharged 3.0 won me over. Motorweek did a nice TV spot on the S4. The mag's and an internet search will give you some comparative data.
Can't speak to the RS4 but I'm very pleased with my S4 purchase. APR is working on a ECU update for the S4, should be a nice kick in the pants!

I faced that question a few months ago and ended up with the 2010 S4.
Reasons may differ, but in the end it was fairly easy for me. It all depends on what you want/expect out of the car.

I too was faced with the same dilemna. But after looking at many beat up RS4's and sellers not returning pm's the decision became much easier. I even almost bought one private party through my dealer. When we ran the carfax it showed it had been rear ended which the seller neglected to divulge. That was the day I bought the 2010 S4. I couldnt take any more BS looking for a used car. It makes just as much power and outperforms in many ways. Mine will be here in two weeks and the mod list is already made
In my mind the only thing the S4 lacks is the V8 growl. That will be replaced by a nice S/C whine
The RS4 looks incredible too but trying to find a well cared for RS4 is very hard. There are rumors of a 2013 RS4 return. Time will tell and for now I'll enjoy my modded S4 on the road course. There are a few RS4's that attend so I'll give my comparison when I see them turn for turn...
